An account of the near-meltdown of a nuclear reactor in the Soviet submarine the K-19 in 1961. Much of the book is based on the memoirs of the submarine's captain Nikolai Zateyev, wrote a memoir of his career, in which he reveals that the vessels that he commanded were so shoddily built that a defective seal nearly sank the K-19 on a shakedown cruise, and in fact it was bad welding that was to cause the near disaster in 1961.
