Attractive rendering of Washington's classic tale about a man who fell asleep for twenty years, with four real carbon print photographs by Sarony and additional engravings by famous artists of the day. Attractive Victorian binding with bright green cloth over beveled boards, lettering and decoration in gilt and black, all edges gilt, 32 pages plus plates. The book has some rubbing and light fraying to the corners and spine ends, good hinges, sound text block with no loosened pages, some wrinkling and chipping to the tissues protecting the photographs. Pages are clean with some occasional light finger soil and a bit of scattered light foxing, mainly to the pages used to mount the photographs, photos themselves are very good. Personal bookplate on front pastedown, gift notation on preliminary blank, no other markings. . First Thus. Hard Cover. Good. 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Bookseller Inventory # 026233

The use of photographs for publicity purposes begain the mid 1860's. These are typical of carte-de-visite style portraits of actors that would have been offered for sale by theaters and stationers.
