About this Item: Paris: Firmin Didot, 1820, 1822., 1822. Single sheet (15 4/8 x 10 inches). Hand-coloured lithograph of Kadou, a native of Oolea in the Western Pacific (some light spotting). Kotzebue met Kadou on the island of Aur, after he and three companions had been blown off course in a storm, and spent 8 months at sea, about 1500 miles from their home island. Kadou spent a long time with Kotzebue and gave the Russians much useful local information. One of the more than 100 of Choris' splendid plates to illustrate Kotzebue's world voyage of 1815-1818 on which he was expedition artist, and which captured the most memorable facts of the voyage to California, Hawaii, Kamchatka and Alaska; the Philippines, Chile and Easter Island. About this Item: No Binding. Condition: Very Good. A detailed hand colored lithographic print from Louis Choris's sweeping series "Voyage Pittoresque Autour du Monde", published in Paris by Firmin Didot in 1822. This print measures 16.5"x10". Louis (or Ludovik) Choris, a Russian of German extraction, showed a talent for natural history at a remarkably early age, and won high praise for his work on Biberstein's journey to the Caucasus in 1813. The present views recall the voyage of the Rurik, 1815-1818, commanded by the Russian Otto von Kotzbue, and the expedition's search for the Northwest Passage, entering the Pacific via the Horn and returning to Europe via the Cape of Good Hope and St. Helena. Choris, the official artist on the expedition, was invited by the St. Petersberg Academy to accompany Kotzbue and the present work represents a fine cross section of the places that the expedition visited: it includes views of Teneriffe, Brazil, Chile, the Pacific Islands, Hawaii, Kamchatka, Philippines, the Cape of Good Hope and Saint Helena. Choris's magnificent work offers important pictorial representations of the people, landscape, and artifacts of the then mysterious islands of the Pacific, California, Alaska, the northwest coast of America, and other far-off lands. This work has great American interest because of its lithographs and its account of Hawaii, California, the Queen Charlotte Islands, the Aleutians, St. Lawrence Island in the Bering Sea, and Kotzebue Island in Alaska. The lithographs are of all aspects of native life and culture. Choris's book is considered to be one of the most beautiful relating to travel. A map of the route of expedition accompanies the work. The book was issued in 22 parts, and complete copies with all the plates colored are very rare. Overall this print is in good condition with some foxing and staining.
