About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | A radically alternative vision of the fakir is given in surviving medieval (Bng. madhya- ug, "Middle Age") and early modern textual sources that predate and coincide with the colonial period in Bengal, such as the widely influential seventeenth-century Yoga Kalandar text as well as Baul oral traditions deeply influenced by this text's cosmology. This thesis aims therefore to fulfill three key objectives: 1) to historically situate the Yoga Kalandar text and its practitioners; 2) to describe the distinctly yogic and tantric aspects of its theology, with specific reference to the way the text harmonizes Sufi and Neoplatonic hypostases and ritual theurgy with Sa khya-inspired cosmology; and 3) to describe how the text's cosmology was integrated in later colonial and modern forms of indigenous Bengali mystical poetry, especially the Baul songs of Lalan Fakir that make numerous creative references to the practices outlined in the Yoga Kalandar and, in a sense, even transcend the text's limitations. As an appendix for reference, a new English translation of this text (from Bengali and French critical editions) is provided. | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 96 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783659711602

About this Item: Hardback. Condition: Good. No Jacket. With a Preface by the Rev. F. Shelley Cuyler, illuminations designed and chromo-lithographs by W.R. Tymms. Each of the 38 pages (of a very heavyweight paper) is illustrated and illuminated; pages associating a flower or plant with a festival of the Church are interspersed with illuminated extracts of Scripture and poetry or poetic prose. Each page protected by two tissue guards. Rebacked, using original backstrip; the worn state of the casing suggests that the work was done some time ago. All edges gilt. Undated, but COPAC gives 1862. Gift inscription on a free end paper is dated 1882. Condition: The boards are very worn and faded, but the pages are clean and bright, and undamaged. Foxing only to what I assume are new end papers (that is, newer than the book). Seller Inventory # 2655

About this Item: Day & Son, London, 1861. Decorated and stamped cloth. Condition: Fair. W R Tymms (illustrator). 37 leaves and a decorated title page of heavy gilt-edged paper each elaborately chromolithographed and interleaved with tissue guards (most still present), bound in blue cloth with both boards elaborately decorated in blind and gilt. There were two bindings to this book and this is the earlier 1861 binding which is illustrated on page 112 of McLean's "Victorian Publishers' Bindings". McLean suggested that the design is by John Leighton. He describes his copy as "worn", as indeed is this one. Both versions were "perfect" bound - glued with gutta percha - and this copy has suffered the inevitable effect of the perishing of the gutta percha. The leaves have become detached and then re-fixed with a more durable material. This has been done quite well, and the book is holding together firmly, but the leaves are all just slightly out of line and some of the tissue guards are a bit frayed at the edges. I presume that there was a printed title page originally, but this is not present and I have taken all the publication details from the catalogue records of the copyright libraries. The covers are rather scuffed and the head and tail of the spine a bit frayed. The leaves are all clean but just a touch dusty round the extreme edges. Size: 7½" x 9¼". Seller Inventory # 008576
