Item Description: Kaizosha, Tokyo, 1951. Wrappers. Book Condition: Good. Yukio Mishima's second novel, 'Kamen no Kakuhaku' or 'Confessions of a Mask,' made Mishima famous by the time he was 24. A putative semi-autobiography about a weak-bodied young man who masks his homosexuality to assimilate into wartime Japanese society, the novel helped to launch Mishima's celebrated twenty-year careerâ€"cut short by his ritual suicide after a failed coup-d'etat in 1970. This copy of the second Japanese edition is warmly inscribed in English to iconic gay American novelist Sanford Friedman, and dated Japan 1952. (Friedman's most celebrated book, “Totempole,” is the story of a soldier's gay love affair with a prisoner during the Korean war, in which Friedman served). A rich association copy of Mishima's most important work. 8vo. Later edition. INSCRIBED by Mishima in English to American author Sanford Friedman, and dated January 13, 1953. Original pictorial wrappers. Text in Japanese. Publication provided via WorldCat. Front cover and first two leaves detached. Some soiling and chipping to wrappers, with soiling to endpapers. Toning to leaves. A remarkable association copy ('for the recollection of your staying in Japan') from one author of an iconic work in gay literature to another. Good in wrappers.
