About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | Provision of good quality drinking water to rural and urban areas is one of the strategies of improving the standard living of public health in Kano State, Nigeria. In view of the above this work assessed the microbiological and physicochemical parameters of Watari Dam, Kano State in comparison with the prescribed World Health Organization desirable limit. Seasonal and sampling sites variation of microbial analysis revealed high microbial load coupled with presence of Escherichia coli above the WHO standard limit. All the physicochemical parameters determined were within the WHO permissible limit with the exception of Nitrate, Phosphate and TDS. It is therefore recommended that proper attention need to be given to the water body by appropriate authorities due to its possible health implication on the consumers through continuous monitoring so as track any adverse environmental changes in the dam. The authors have made every effort to provide an exciting and invaluable learning resources to expedite further study for the emerging water quality problems in the study area. | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 72 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783330341470

About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | Peak Flow Rate and ECG tracings in Pregnant Women in Kano State,Nigeria | Values of peak expiratory flow rate (PEF), ECG and Hematological variables in 250 females at their reproductive ages, made up of 123 pregnant subjects and 127 non-pregnant control group, living and/or working in kura local government area and its environs were obtained. Pearson s correlation coefficient between PEF and ages as well as ECG, Hematological and other anthropometric measurements were calculated in both groups.Multiple regression analyses were made to obtain the best prediction formula using the measured variables in pregnant and non-pregnant groups. Furthermore, graphs were plotted to show the variation of PEF with age in the subjects and controls with specific weights. Data for plotting the graphs were generated using the prediction formula generated from this study and other prediction formula generated from previous studies among Nigerians, whose best prediction formula incorporated age and height. The graphs illustrated the limitations of applying formula derived from a different race, tribe and/or generation to an entire different people with dissimilar characteristics. This lends credence to the need to make use of recently generated formula for local use. | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 112 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783848486168

About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | Both HIV and Tuberculosis infections are associated with lipid peroxidation and antioxidant imbalance. Pathology of the two produce free radicals which lead to lipid peroxidation indices one of which is Malondialdehyde (MDA) and to disease progression due to CD4 cells apoptosis. The study was carried out with the objective of determining Serum MDA, Vitamin E, CD4, CD8 and lipid peroxidation index (LPI) in four different subgroups comprising of HIV, Tuberculosis and HIV/TB co-infected patients and the Controls with a view to assessing the interaction between oxidants and antioxidants in the course of HIV/TB co-infection. The higher MDA result from the subjects supports the assertion that HIV/TB co-infection is associated with increased lipid peroxidation and lower antioxidant potential. It can therefore be concluded that co-infection with Tuberculosis exacerbates oxidative stress in HIV patients, while treatment enhances their anti-oxidant status and ameliorates the oxidative stress. | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 128 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783659612923

About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | An experiment was conducted in farmers fields at five local government areas of Kano state namely; Bagwai, Garko, Kibiya, Madobi and Rimingado during 2016 rainy season. The research was aimed at evaluating performance of sweet potato improved varieties in terms of yield and nutritional qualities for possible recommendation to the local farmers. The design of the experiment was randomised complete block design with the five locations as the replicates. Data collected were subjected to analysis of variance using Genstat 17th edition statistical software and the means were separated using DMRT at 5% level of probability. The result revealed significant differences among the varieties on the agro-morphological characters and some nutritional contents. The local variety (Danchina) produced the highest total yield (25.5 t ha-1) but was statistically at par with the newly introduced improved variety King J (20.4 t ha-1). Phenologically the varieties were all similar in their growth habit (spreading) but differed in vine colour, root shape, skin colour and flesh colour. The introduced improved variety T121 had significantly higher vitamin C (9.23 mg/ dl) and carbohydrate content (52.22%). | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 92 pp. Seller Inventory # K9786202026734

About this Item: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Aufl.. Language: English . This book usually ship within 10-15 business days and we will endeavor to dispatch orders quicker than this where possible. Brand New Book. The rapid industrialization, growing population and changing life style are the root causes for increasing rate of solid waste generation in developing countries. The uncontrolled solid waste disposal in the cities is creating serious environmental and public health problems. The improper management results in high possibility of leach ate leakage with subsequent impact on soils, plants, ground water, aquatic organisms and human beings. Comparative assessment of the impact of a dump site on the quality of ground water (wells) was carried out in Gyadi Gyadi area of Kano metropolis Nigeria. The level of some physical and biological parameters of the ground water (wells) and dump sites were assessed, temperature, pH, conductivity, suspended solids, turbidity , hardness colour were determined in the water samples while e coil and f coli were determined in the waste dump samples. Mean concentration of some physical and biological parameters except that of temperature, colour, pH, and total dissolved solids were found to be above the acceptable limit of national and international standard of drinking water quality, WHO and NESREA. About this Item: Condition: New. Publisher/Verlag: LAP Lambert Academic Publishing | Agricultural development projects and policy makers in Nigeria have focused more on the production sub-sector of the commodity value chain rather than all the sub-sectors. This has led to an increase in production of agricultural commodities over the decades and a neglect of processing and marketing sub-sectors. This has led to a gap in knowledge of the other sectors. Value chain approach has a holistic approach in identifying with all the sub-sectors of the commodity value chain. This book gives an insight to the rice value chain in Kano, one of the most populous cities in the West African sub-region. The book provides information on actors and supporters of the rice value chain and how the network is organised in terms of relationships, linkages and governance. How value is added and who has the highest margin as the commodity moves from the point of production and processing at rural clusters through consumption at urban centers. The use of social net-mapping adds value to the book as qualitative data are being analyzed qualitatively and the result presented in a cob-web like model. This book should be useful to professional in agricultural marketing field and policy makers. | Format: Paperback | Language/Sprache: english | 352 pp. Seller Inventory # K9783330089730

About this Item: Indiana University Press, United States, 2005. Hardback. Condition: New. Language: English . Brand New Book. In Farmers and the State in Colonial Kano, Steven Pierce examines issues surrounding the colonial state and the distribution of state power in northern Nigeria. Here, Pierce deconstructs the colonial state and offers a unique reading of land tenure that challenges earlier views of the role of indirect rule. According to Pierce, land tenure was the means the colonial government used to rule the local population and extract taxes from them, but it was also a political logic with a fundamental flaw and a Western bias. In Pierce s view, colonial representations of land tenure claimed to reflect precolonial systems of rule, but instead, fundamentally misrepresented farmers experience. He maintains that this misrepresentation created a paradox at the core of the colonial state which persists into the present and helps to explain contemporary problems in African states. In this sweeping and eloquent account of African history, readers will find an extended genealogy of land law and taxation as well as rich material on the power of indigenous knowledge and the persistence of colonial systems of rule.
