[Marcus Kappel acquired its assets mainly with the grain trade. By 1873, the company was based in Cologne, before the headquarters was moved to Berlin. There was Kappel Member of the Supervisory Board of mine-AG and Phoenix. In 1897, he withdrew into retirement. He was married to Mathilde Kappel and decreed in 1913 with a personal fortune of about 7.5 million marks. The revenue in the same year amounted to 490,000 marks. Marcus Kappel began his collecting activities only after he had sat down to rest. Advised by Wilhelm von Bode, he built a high-quality collection of Dutch and Flemish paintings of the 17th Century, in which high-quality works of Willem van Aelst , Gerard Dou , Anthony van Dyck , Frans Hals , Nicolaes Maes , Gabriel Metsu , Rembrandt van Rijn , Peter Paul Rubens and Jan Steen were he in a specially built Oberlichtsaal his house in the Tiergartenstraße hanged 14th For the hanging of the works of art was also responsible Wilhelm von Bode, who is in the design of its presentation in the Kaiser Friedrich Museum oriented.
