Der österreichisch-US-amerikanische Pathologe, Bakteriologe, Serologe und Immunologe Karl Landsteiner (1868 1943) gehört zu den bedeutendsten Persönlichkeiten der Medizingeschichte. Sein Name ist der Öffentlichkeit wenig bekannt; er tritt hinter seinem Schaffen zurück. 1900/1901 entdeckt Landsteiner die klassischen Blutgruppen A, B und Null und schafft damit die wichtigste Voraussetzung für den gefahrlosen Blutersatz. Zu den wissenschaftlichen Großtaten Landsteiners und seiner Mitarbeiter gehören weiterhin die Entdeckung des Rhesusfaktors 1940 und die danach mögliche Klärung der Entstehung der schweren Neugeborenengelbsucht (fetale Erythroblastose). 1919 verlässt er seine Heimatstadt Wien und wandert 1923 über Holland in die USA aus, wo er 1929 die amerikanische Staatsbürgerschaft erwirbt. 1930 erhält Karl Landsteiner den Nobelpreis für Medizin. Walther Goebel was the colleague of Karl Landsteiner at Rockefeller University and in 1973 was the first recipient of the Avery-Landsteiner Prize for Immunology. Garrison-Morton 2576.2. "During the First World War, [Landsteiner] became interested in the antibody response to chemically defined haptens and over the next quarter-century . . . he contributed impressively to an understanding of the chemical basis for antigen-antibody interactions, as summarized in his famous book, The Specificity of Serological Reactions [the original German edition is offered here]. While acknowledging the importance of his discovery of blood groups, Landsteiner is said to have felt that his Nobel prize [1930] should have been awarded for his work on antibody-hapten interactions" (Silverstein, History of Immunology, pp. 343-44; see also p. 107).
