Item Description: Kelley, 1949. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. This is warmly inscribed by Judge Kelly on her photo. There is some toning as usual around the photo but otherwise no mark, no flaws, contents clean and tight. Cloth decorated covers have a little shelf wear to edges and mild overall toning. Quite collectible copy of the homespun wisdom of the juvenile court judge who was a key figure in the Tennessee adoption scandals which virtually stole children from poor homes and sold them to Joan Crawford and other wealthy people. Reading her little bits of wisdom one can't help but believe that she thought she was doing something good in her direct involvement with the Tennessee adoption scandals. RARE this nice. Item Description: Privately Printed by Judge Camille Kelley, Memphis, Tennessee, July,1948, 1948. "Kelleygrams", Privately Printed by Judge Camille Kelley, Memphis, Tennessee, July,1948. She was implicated in an infamous "Baby for Sale" Scandal in Memphis during the 1940s with Georgia Tann, the director of The Tennessee Childrens Home of Memphis, Tennessee. Judge Kelley, without due process of law, would place children with The Tennessee Childrens Home, and Georgia Tann, its director, would deliver them to Los Angeles for placement with Movie Stars and wealthy Angelinos far away from Memphis. In 1948, Anti-Crump Governor, Gordon Browning appointed a young prominent lawyer, Bob Taylor, a descendant of two Tennessee Governors, to investigate rampant rumors of baby selling. Mr. Taylor staked out the Tennessee Childrens Home, and then followed a nurse with several infants to the Memphis Airport where they both boarded a plane to Los Angeles. Mr. Taylor followed the nurse to a hotel where he witnessed the baby transfer in the lobby of a hotel. Shortly thereafter, Judge Kelley, no longer protected by political boss, E.H. Crump, was allowed to retire, and Georgia Tann died before she could be prosecuted. The foreword to this book was written by Mary Pickford, and it is signed in ink by Judge Camille Kelley on her frontispiece photo and by Movie Starlett Mary Pickford below her foreword. Apparently, Judge Kelley had important contacts in Hollywood. Several books and television documentaries and exposees were done on this scandal which devasted many innocent lives in the process. The dual signatures of Judge Kelley and Mary Pickford makes this book a real collector's item. Bookseller Inventory # ABE-205178922
