Item Description: ReInk Books, 2017. Softcover. Book Condition: NEW. Reprinted from edition. NO changes have been made to the original text. This is NOT a retyped or an ocr'd reprint. Illustrations, Index, if any, are included in black and white. Each page is checked manually before printing. As this reprint is from very old book, there could be some missing or flawed pages, but we always try to make the book as complete as possible. Fold-outs, if any, are not part of the book. If the original book was published in multiple volumes then this reprint is of only one volume, not the whole set. This paperback book is SEWN, where the book block is actually sewn (smythe sewn/section sewn) with thread before binding which results in a more durable type of paperback binding. Item Description: New York: J.B. Pond Lyceum Bureau, [1915]. [1915]., 1915. Book Condition: Very good. New York: J.B. Pond Lyceum Bureau, [1915]. [1915]. Very good. - Quarto, 10-1/2 inches high by 8 inches wide. Softcover self-wraps. A 4- page brochure promoting E.W. Kemble's lectures under the aegis of the Major James B. Pond's Lyceum Bureau making use of Kemble's cartoons and political caricature to satirize the politics of the period. A portrait illustrates the cover page and a series of vignettes frame the text printed at the center of the inner 2 pages. In a series of cartoons along the top, a black child with a butterfly net sneaks up on a hidden shape to reveal that he's captured a donkey while along the bottom, a black matron suddenly finds herself in the arms of an empty suit of clothes blown by the wind. Along the left are portrayed illustrations of a moose sitting on a sleeping elephant's chest and subsequently peeking through a hole in a circus tent titled "Inauguration Circus: Two Rings". At the bottom, Teddy Roosevelt chases "The Trusts" with a club. Along the right edge, Teddy is portrayed as a boxer having knocked out "The Trusts", a pig in a "pork barrel" prepares to enter the door to congress and a banker with angel wings plays the innocent. The text reads, in part: "In Mr. Kemble's program, Roosevelt's vigorous and picturesque war against the sordid interests who sought to run the Government, his success in gathering about him a band of unselfish and patriotic statesmen, and the story of how they made life miserable for the 'Old Guard,' is told amusingly and forcefully in picture and text. The Taft Administration follows that of Roosevelt, How Taft's own party put every obstacle in his way to prevent his carrying out Roosevelt's policies, is shown in a succession of humorous and striking cartoons." There is some minor soiling and the edges are lightly darkened. Very good. The American illustrator Edward Windsor Kemble (1861-1933) is perhaps best known for illustrating the original edition of Mark Twain's "Adventures of Huckleberry Finn". Mostly self-taught, he was a successful contributor to periodicals and became the major political cartoonist for the New York Graphic. While working thus, he acquired his only formal training at the Art Students League of New York. He was a frequent contributor to Life Magazine after its founding in 1883 and was staff political cartoonist for Collier's from 1903-07 followed by employment at Harper's Weekly and Leslie's Weekly. In addition to his illustrations for Twain's novels, he also illustrated Harriet Beecher Stowe's "Unlce Tom's Cabin" and Joel Chandler Harris' "Uncle Remus Stories" and is often thus best remembered for his cartoons of African Americans.RARE.
