Illustrated Edition. 25 volumes uniform in style although 4 volumes have cover with more ornate decorations, each around 400 pp, with bw illustrations, all bound in green cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt medallion profile of Scott to front 4 volumes have "Walter Scott" and garland around portrait with further gilt and blind stamped decorations these 4 do not have beveled boards and all have suffered loss of gilt from spines, other volumes have blind stamped beveled edges. All volumes in broadly similar condition, spine ends and corners rubbed, edges and endpapers a little spotted, top edges dust marked, 13 volumes have some loose gatherings which stand proud of the fore edge, they remain attached but would benefit from a drop of glue. A reading set. will weigh around 14 Kg packed so will need extra postage.

The series became widely read in Europe, being known simply as The Waverley Novels, due to Scott not taking public authorship until 1827. The novels are set over a period of a eight hundred years, from 1097 with 'Count Robert of Paris' to the 19th century with 'St. Ronan's Well'. Scott took inspiration from his homeland of Scotland, setting fifteen out of the twenty-five novels there.
