Item Description: Marshall and Marilyn R. Wolf with Robert Marcuson Publishing Services, New York, 2003. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 9.5 x 13 Hardback in Fine condition; Illustrated by 43 color plates 130+ color and black and white figures ; The Marshall and Marilyn R. Wolf Collection of these textiles including suzani and Lakai work. Examples include large covers, saddlecloths, embroidered belts, bags and hair ornaments. "Since the independence of Central Asian states in the last decade of the 20th century, the art market has seen an explosion in the sale of magnificently colorful textiles from the region. This has raised the academic interest in the material, and we are now increasingly able to look at these textiles not merely as aesthetically bold and beautiful objects, but also as collections worthy of scholarly attention. This publication contributes considerably to our understanding of one aspect of Central Asian textile production, the largest embroidered hangings usually referred to as suzani; here they are referred to by the localized term Keshte, translated as 'pattered needlework'. Marshall and Marilyn Wolf have persuaded the imminent Islamic Art historian Ernest Grube to study and write about their superb collection of Central Asian embroideries, and this catalog was produced to coincide with an exhibition of key pieces from their collection in New York, on the occasion of the 10th ICOC meeting in Washington D.C. in the Spring of 2003 "The publication is beautifully produced, with sumptuous color illustrations, including some very high quality detail photographs. 43 textiles are presented, each with an extensive text entry that includes a detailed stylistic analysis."-Dr. Ruth Barnes, Department of Eastern Art,Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, U.K.; 3.5; 144 pp. Bookseller Inventory # BOOKS005361I
