About this Item: Jewish National & University Library Press - Arno Press, Jerusalem - New York, 1976. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good + +. No Jacket. Limited. 247 x 175 mm. 7" x 9.5" . 37, 286,3 Pages Hebrew text. Introduction by Haim Hillel Ben-Sasson. Limited, numbered, facsimile edition of 550 copies, on fine Swedish paper, of the 1585 edition, from the copy (apparently the only complete one extant) at the Jewish National and University Library in Jerusalem. In Kevod Elohim, printed in Constantinopole, Avraham ibn Migash, who was a physician to the Sultan, deals with the Reformation movement in Europe and, sometimes polemically, with the Christian-Jewish debate. While Luther initially thought that the Reformation would woo the Jews to Christianity, ibn Migash, like many of his Jewish contemporaries, believed that the Reformation would eventually cause Christians (after they atoned for persecuting Jews through the centuries) to return to Judaism. Among other issues, he also argues against exegesis based on translations of biblical texts. In his detailed and incisive introduction, Haim Ben-Sasson describes the intellectual and cultural climate of the Spanish Diaspora in Constantinopole, and deals in depth with the topics considered by Avraham ibn Migash.
