Item Description: Kegan Paul International, London, 1998. Hardcover. Book Condition: g to vg. First edition. Quarto. XXXI, [1], 806, XXIV, 807-1541, [1]pp. Original blue cloth, with gold lettering on spines. Books housed in their matching slipcase. Color frontispiece portrait of Aga Khan III in each volume. Publisher's logo on each title. Aga Khan III (1877-1957) was the 48th Imam of Shia Ismaili Muslims. Through his intimate knowledge of Eastern as well as Western cultures, he was able to play a significant role in the international affairs of his time. His long public career had many dimensions. He was a member of the Indian Imperial Legislative Council (1902-1904), President of the All India Muslim League (1906-1913), and the founder of the All India Muslim Conference (1928-1929). He successfully campaigned for separate electorates for all Muslims of India, leading a delegation in 1906 to the Viceroy for this purpose. He was the leader of the muslim, and the entire Indian, delegation to the Round Table Conference in London (1930-1932) which discussed India's constitutional future. In 1934 he was appointed a member of the British Privy Council. He served as India's representative at the Conference for the Reduction of Armaments in Geneva in 1932 and as the chief delegate of India at the League of Nations in the 1930s. In 1937 he was unanimously elected President of the League. Aga Khan III was also a social reformer whose concerns included the alleviation of rural poverty and the uplift of women in society. An advocate of modern education, he became an ardent supporter of male and female educational advancement in India and East Africa and played a key role in the development of the Muslim University of Aligarh. A keen connoisseur of culture, he advocated a truly multicultural education blending the best and highest of Western and Eastern literary classics. He was a champion of amity between nations and peoples. In India he consistently supported the ideal of Hindu-Muslim unity, reminding both that India was their common parent. On the international scene he strove strenuously for the ideal of world peace. This book is a comprehensive collection of his speeches and writings covering the years 1902 to 1955. The topics include constitutional progress in India, education, rural development, Hindu-Muslim unity, Indians in Africa, Turkey after World War I, the renaissance of Islamic culture, Persian poetry, the fortunes of the League of Nations, the importance of science and technology, the status of women, Islam in the modern age and Pan-Islamism. Slight shelf wear on slipcase. Upper front corner of second volume slightly bumped (not affecting pages). Slipcase in overall good to good+, bindings in good+ to very good, interior in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 38632

Item Description: Printed for A. Millar, at Buchanan's Head, over against St. Clementâs Church, in the Strand, 1742., London:, 1742. Second edition. 8vo. [2], vi, 234, [6], 40 pp. Frontispiece engraved folding portrait (by J. Hulett), engr. plates, engraved folding map of the Monghol Empire and Part of Tartary. Original full calf, spine stamped spine, raised bands, maroon spine label; joints reinforced with kozo, corners showing. Very good. Modern brown cloth slip-case (fine). Rubber stamp of the Scottish Rite Memorial Library, Portland, Oregon. RARE. SECOND EDITION, corrected, of an important source for study of 18th century Persia and the reign by Nadir Shah (1688-1747). This account is remarkably detailed, but it also records most notably, Nadirâs invasion of India during 1737-38. It was the first book in English treating of Nãdir Shãh, âthe scourge of God.â It is important not only as a first-hand contribution to the history of contemporary events, but also for the number of original documents which it alone has preserved.â â" DNB. âA catalogue of manuscripts in the Persic, Arabic, and Sanskerrit languages. Collected in the East by James Fraser.â (40 pages, at end) has special t.p. The first edition was also issued in 1742 [same collation, but differs with the imprint [Printed by W. Strahan for the author]]. This is the second, as stated on the title-page. It is dedicated to Richard Mead, physician to the King. The preface, detailing the authorâs purpose and method, is typographically slightly reset for this issue, seems to be textually the same as the first issue. The second-title for the Catalogue of Manuscripts, also differs in the imprint, the vignette. The A. Miller ads are new with this issue and the first edition errata is not present. Thus the main difference between the two issues, are the imprint (publisher), and the correction of the first edition errata. Fraser was both a collector of books and manuscripts, but also stories, the personalization of which he felt adds to the authenticity of the account. He writes that Nadir Shahâs âfirst exploitsâ were âforwardedâ to him from a âGentleman now in England, who resided several years in Persia, speaks that language, and has been frequently in Company with that Conqueror.â The assassination attempt by his son, which occurred in 1741, is not described in this volume. In 1747 another assassination was planned and carried out by his own officers on 20 June of that year. James Fraser, whose father was Alexander Fraser (d.1733), was a collector of Oriental manuscripts (including about 200 Sanskrit and Zend manuscripts, acquired by the Radcliffe Library, Oxford, and later relocated to the Bodleian Library â" known to be the first âcollectionâ brought to Europe), the evidence of this being published in this very book. He twice lived in Surat, India (1730-40), he later served as a âfactorâ in the East India Company (1743-9). See: DNB, II, pp. 244-5; Charles Edward Buckland, Dictionary of Indian Biography, p.155. Locations: Aberdeen University, British Library, Glasgow University, Oxford University. Bookseller Inventory # ME1065

Item Description: London: Printed by W.Strahan, for the Author; And sold by G.Strahan, and J.Brotherton, J.Oswald , 1742., 1742. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo. pp. 1 p.l., vi, 234, [6]index & errata, 40. folding engraved frontis. & folding engraved map. woodcut ornaments & initials. later half calf, rebacked & recornered, endpapers preserved (map browned, occasional light foxing). First Edition of "the first book in English treating of Nãdir Shãh, the scourge of God. It is important not only as a first-hand contribution to the history of contemporary events [Nãdir Shãh invaded India in 1737-38], but also for the number of original documents which it alone has preserved." (DNB) Fraser collected materials for his account during his first stay in India, 1730-40 (he returned as a factor for the East India Company, 1743-49). He managed to acquire some 200 manuscripts in the Persian, Arabic, and Sanskrit languages, a catalogue of which is appended here, with separate title (pp. 40). His collection of Sanskrit manuscripts was the first of that kind ever brought to Europe, although individual manuscripts had reached England and France even earlier. The entire collection eventually came to reside in the Bodleian Library at Oxford University. Bookseller Inventory # elala554
