About this Item: London : Penguin in association with Hamish Hamilton, 1966. First Edition. Near fine copy in the original stiff-card wrappers; edges slightly nicked and dust-dulled as with age. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and strong. Physical description; 429 p. ; 20 cm. Notes; Originally published: London : Hamish Hamilton, 1964. 1971 Reprint of first Penguin edition. Series; [Penguin books. no. C2445.] Contents; Killer in the rain. Man who liked dogs. Curtain. Try the girl. Mandarin's jade. Bay City blues. Lady in the lake. No crime in the mountains. Summary; It was in the pulp detective magazines of the 1930s that Raymond Chandler's definitive take on the hard-boiled detective story first appeared. Here then, from the well-thumbed pages of "Black Mask" and "Dime Detective Magazine", are eight of his finest stories including "The Man Who Liked Dogs", "The Lady in the Lake" and "Bay City Blues". Sharper than a hoodlum's switchblade, more exciting than an unexpected red-head and stronger than a double shot of whisky, they are packed full of the punchy poetry and laconic wit that makes Chandler the undisputed master of his genre. Review: A posthumous collection of eight stories by a master of hard-boiled evocation shows the sources not only of Philip Marlowe, the shamus, but also of several of the Marlowe novels. For example, the title story later went into The Big Sleep. Though Marlowe has a number of other names here, he's still Marlowe and can tick off a characterization with extreme economy and he also knows L.A. backwards and downwards. The stories first appeared in pulp magazines back in the '30's and they combine that rough rasp of authenticity with a high literary finish which has secured Chandler's position, along with Hammett's, in the line-up of immortals. (Kirkus Reviews) Subjects; Short stories, English. Short stories in English, 1900 Texts. Crime & mystery ; Short stories. FICTION / Mystery & Detective / General. Detective and mystery stories, American. 429 pp. Seller Inventory # 239793

About this Item: GRIN Publishing, 2007. Paperback. Condition: New. 1. Auflage.. Language: English . Brand New Book. Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject American Studies - Literature, grade: 2, University of Kassel (Anglistik-Amerikanistik), course: American Crime Fiction, 14 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: Raymond Thornton Chandler started his career as a crime novelist relatively late in 1933 at the age of 45 (Widdicombe, xvi). With the foundation of the Black Mask Magazine, Chandler, as well as many other writers, got the chance to test his talent as a crime novelist and simultaneously to raise some money. His first stories were miniature novels which were strongly influenced by his British sophistication and education (Phillips, 17). But he was aware of the fact that he had to veil his style of writing in order to make it acceptable to the American readers, especially the Black Mask readers (Phillips, 17). During 1933 and 1939 Chandler published 20 detective stories in several pulp magazines until he wrote his first novel The Big Sleep (Neumeyer, 329). By writing longer fiction Chandler had to portray his characters fully and give an authentic sense of the world, whereas the short story allowed him to rely on action (MacShane, 63). Chandler s ambition was to mark off from the English detectives of Agatha Christie and Dorothy Sayers, i.e. to create a reliable character that would leave scars and transfer what he calls a half-poetical emotion that is the heart of the work (MacShane, 69). This kind of reliability became one of Chandler s dogmas and occurs not only in his creation of characters and plot but also in the historical background of the stories. In the following paper I m going to analyze the origin and development of the private-eye in general. I will focus my analysis on the development of the detective in American hard-boiled fiction with reference to Philip Marlowe in Raymond Chandler s The Curtain, Killer in the Rain, and the novel The Big Sleep. The choice relies on the fact that The Big Sleep and its character. Seller Inventory # LIB9783638659215
