Item Description: Berlin : Militärverlag der Dt. Demokrat. Republik. Book Condition: Gut. Ausgabe: 1. Auflage Umfang/Format: 193 Seiten , 21 cm Erscheinungsjahr: 1980 Einbandart und Originalverkaufspreis: : M 6.80 Sachgebiet: Geschichte und Historische Hilfswissenschaften Schlagwörter: Philby, Harold Adrian Russel , Secret Service , Geheimdienst , Lebenserinnerungen / Spione / Einz. Pers. ? Demokrat. Republik. Book Condition: Gut. Ausgabe: 1. Auflage Umfang/Format: 193 Seiten , 21 cm Erscheinungsjahr: 1983 Schlagwörter: Philby, Harold Adrian Russel , Secret Service , Geheimdienst , Lebenserinnerungen / Spione / Einz. Pers. ? Item Description: Alfred A. Knopf New York, 1989. 1/4 cloth. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: fine. First American Edition. Hardcover. Octavo. 292 pages. Book Condition: Fine. One-quarter black cloth binding with black paper over boards. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Unclipped. Author Knightley (1929-2016) called Kim Philby, "the most remarkable spy in the history of espionage". (Washington Post, 2016)From the cover, "The Story of Kim Philby, The British intelligence officer who was , in fact, for three decades a Soviet agent - told by the last journalist to speak with him before his death. The only western journalist ever to interview Philby in depth since his defection in 1963 to the Soviet Union". In her her New York Times review of the book on March 21, 1989, Michiko Kakutani wrote, "Friends and colleagues, on their part, have speculated that Philby relished leading a double life, that he had what one called an ''abnormal personality.'' Malcolm Muggeridge argued, on one occasion, that Philby became a double agent as a way of following in his adventurer-father's footsteps; on another, that he became a double agent as a way of defying that same father. As for Mr. Knightley, he offers the reader no real insights into the shadowy workings of Philby's psyche, no persuasive new theory as to the reasons for his betrayal. As a result, after all the pages devoted to unraveling his life, Philby still remains an enigma - the mysterious third man at the heart of a real-life thriller.". Bookseller Inventory # 138

Item Description: London: Bloomsbury, 2014. 2nd edition. Fine cloth copy in an equally fine dust-wrapper. Particularly and surprisingly well-preserved; tight, bright, clean and especially sharp-cornered. Physical description; xii, 352 pages, 32 unnumbered pages of plates: illustrations; 25 cm. Notes; "With an afterword by John Le Carré" -- dust jacket. Includes bibliographical references (pages 333-337) and index. Summary; Kim Philby was the most notorious British defector and Soviet mole in history. Agent, double agent, traitor and enigma, he betrayed every secret of Allied operations to the Russians in the early years of the Cold War. Philby's two closest friends in the intelligence world, Nicholas Elliott of MI6 and James Jesus Angleton, the CIA intelligence chief, thought they knew Philby better than anyone, and then discovered they had not known him at all. This is a story of intimate duplicity; of loyalty, trust and treachery, class and conscience; of an ideological battle waged by men with cut-glass accents and well-made suits in the comfortable clubs and restaurants of London and Washington; of male friendships forged, and then systematically betrayed. With access to newly released MI5 files and previously unseen family papers, and with the cooperation of former officers of MI6 and the CIA, this definitive biography unlocks what is perhaps the last great secret of the Cold War.
