Item Description: [East Hampton, NY], 2013. Unique artist's book, hand painted on Rives BFK paper, by Barry McCallion, signed and dated by the artist on the titlepage, "Barry McCallion, 2013." Page size: 7-1/2 x 5-3/4 inches: 96pp. (48 of text and 48 of full-page original art). Bound by Rhonda Miller: hand-sewn full tan limp leather with closure simulating the pocket diary style of notebook manufactured in the late 19th century, the time in which Kipling's novel is set; housed in tan linen clamshell box with image of elephant on green ground within red circle by Barry McCallion, label printed in black with title and signed by the artist on the spine, box executed by Joelle Webber at the Mermaid Bindery. Using India inks and Winsor Newton colored inks, the artist, Barry McCallion, has created a non-verbal text for one of the main themes of the novel: the Lama's quest to free himself from the Wheel of Things by finding the legendary "River of the Arrow." Set against the backdrop of "The Great Game" (conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia) with espionage and intrigue as important an element as the backdrop of India itself, KIM is a classic novel. Barry McCallion has altered text pages, selected for their references to the spiritual quest that the Lama and Kim undertake, highlighting the text in green and outlining appropriate passages in red outline (the Red Bull on the green field). The full page images on each verso are all a circle within a square, starting with a single silver-gilt dot. The paintings become more and more complicated, and colorful, as the "quest" for the River of the Arrow progresses. Overturned bowls of food, ignited matches, fruit, leaves, chairs, all make their way towards the boundaries of the circle, which becomes more frenzied and intense with each page, With lines and circles within the red circle, one can almost see a clock, marking the passage of time, Finally, the last image is complete within a red border - "the River of the Arrow is here.". Edition : New York, Original publisher?s black ½ morocco with light blue marble boards, spine in six compartments of raised bands and gilt floral motifs, gilt text in two and three, top edges gilt, edges uncut (occasionally unopened), endpapers marbled. , The later volumes (vols XXVI, XXVII, & XXVIII) are published in purple and dark blue boards. The ?Outward Bound? edition was published in installments between 1897 until the end of Kipling?s life in 1936. The complete set eventually included 36 volumes; however, variations appeared in the printing over the years. Text published in two volumes in earlier printings was combined into single volumes to save money on the part of the publishers. The published letters of Rudyard Kipling (2004) indicate that Kipling often disapproved of the cost-saving measures of Scribner?s, preferring that later printings kept the same numeration of the volumes as the earlier ones. , Size : 8vo. , Each volume with a frontispiece, several illustrative plates throughout., Volume : 27 volumes (of 36). Lacks Part One of ?From Sea to Sea? (Volume XV), otherwise a very fine set, text and plates are clean and crisp and bound in handsome period binding. Bookseller Inventory # B3715

Item Description: Doubleday, Page & Company, Garden City, NY, 1922. First edition, later printing of what many consider Kipling's masterpiece. Octavo, original cloth, embossed black and gilt to the front panel, gilt titles to the spine, illustrated. Signed by Rudyard Kipling on the title page. In near fine condition with light rubbing to the extremities. Kim unfolds against the backdrop of The Great Game, the political conflict between Russia and Britain in Central Asia. The novel made the term "Great Game" popular and introduced the theme of great power rivalry and intrigue. It is set after the Second Afghan War which ended in 1881, but before the Third, probably in the period 1893 to 1898. The novel is notable for its detailed portrait of the people, culture, and varied religions of India. "The book presents a vivid picture of India, its teeming populations, religions, and superstitions, and the life of the bazaars and the road." Considered by many to be Kipling's masterpiece, opinion appears varied about its consideration as children's literature or not. Roger Sale, in his history of children's literature, concludes "Kim is the apotheosis of the Victorian cult of childhood, but it shines now as bright as ever, long after the Empire's collapse." Named by Modern Library as one of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century. In 2003 the book was listed on the BBC's The Big Read poll of the UK's "best-loved novel.".
