First Edition
Illustrated printed wrappers, small 4to, 48 pp, plates, ills. 58 lots. From the Preface: "The following fifty-eight lots are among the finest letters and papers from the English Civil War to have been offered for sale at auction. The letters connected with the Royalist party formed a portion of the correspondence of Prince Rupert which was transmitted from his secretary to his descendants, the Bennetts of Pyt House, Wiltshire. In 1847 the family sold them to Mr. Bentley, the publisher. The history of the Fairfax and other letters connected with the Parliamentary side is more romantic. Being largely written between Civil War commanders, the letters reveal the decision-making processes of the conflict. The urgency, tension and immediacy of events are vividly portrayed, as are the changing fortunes and relationships of the parties involved. The letters of Charles I and his nephew Prince Rupert, in particular, reflect the nuances of their relationship on almost a day-to-day basis: Charles is aware of Rupert's hypersensitive, sometimes prickly nature; he reveals his own Stuart pride, even showing a degree of jealousy of Rupert's greater military abilities; he displays occasional ill-temper, sometimes irascibility, and yet shows the warmth of his regard for Rupert, to whom he could, if necessary, make humble apology." Neatly but unfortunately colour-coded by the previous owner, a bookseller, with four coloured tape bands around the spine, otherwise Very Good.
