About this Item: 1611. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. THE HOLY BIBLE, CONTEYNING THE OLD TESTAMENT, AND THE NEW: NEWLY TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINALL TONGUES: AND WITH THE FORMER TRANSLATIONS DILIGENTLY COMPARED AND REVISED, BY HIS MAJESTIES SPECIALL COMMANDEMENT. APPOINTED TO BE READ IN CHURCHES. LONDON: ROBERT BARKER, 1611. Folio (16 1/2 x 10 1/4). First edition, second issue (Fry). An extremely fine, tall copy. The Great “She” Bible, the “Authorized Version” or King James Bible, is one of the greatest monuments of English literature. This issue is known as the “She” Bible for the reading “she went into the citie” in Ruth 3:15. The general title is usually dated 1613, though the NT title bears the date 1611. The greater part of the book was printed in 1611, but many copies were not released until 1613. Smith suggests [the delay resulted from] an accident in the printing-office which destroyed a large number of sheets” (Herbert). One of the masterpieces of the English language, the King James Bible is surely the greatest literary work ever created by committee. In the preface, Miles Smith, one of the dozens of translators, commented on the importance of the work: “Translation it is that openeth the window, to let in the light; that breaketh the shell, that we may eat the kernel; that putteth aside the curtain, that we may look into the most Holy place; that removeth the cover of the well, that we may come by the water.” “For every Englishman who had read Sidney or Spenser, or had seen Shakespeare acted at the Globe, there were hundreds who had read or heard the Bible with close attention as the words of God. The effect of the continual domestic study of the book upon the national character, imagination and intelligence for nearly three centuries to come, was greater than that of any literary movement in our annals, or any religious movement since the coming of St. Augustine” (G. M. Trevelyan). Complete copies of this Bible in early bindings are among the most sought-after books in the English language. Printing and the Mind of Man 114. Herbert 319. Black letter, text in double columns, 59 lines to the full column, printed within ruled border with enclosed inner and outer margins for side-notes, roman type for chapter summaries, roman and italic for side-notes, general and New Testament title within woodcut border (McKerrow & Ferguson 231), almanac and calendar in red and black, woodcut historiated and decorated initials, headbands and tailpieces, engraved More-Speed 1611 map Canaan and Speed's Genealogies inserted before Genesis. Map is mounted on guards. Eighteenth-century Cambridge-style sueded calf, edges tinted red; rebacked with later marbled endpapers. An excellent copy of a rare book. Seller Inventory # 3

About this Item: Robert Barker, 1611. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. BIBLE, IN ENGLISH, AUTHORIZED VERSION [The Holy Bible, Conteyning the Old Testament, and the New], FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE OF KING JAMES' GREAT "HE" BIBLE; Robert Barker; London, 1611. The Shackerstone Church St. Peter Copy, originally held by the historic Shackerstone Church St. Peter in Leicestershire and one of the few copies with evidence of original provenance. First edition, first issue of the King James Bible, with the reading ‘he’ in Ruth 3:15 (Bb2r). Preparation of the Royal Version took more than 5 years and was laboriously attended to by over 50 translators and researchers. 6 separate groups were assigned a specific section of the Scriptures and each made a preliminary translation under the direction of Lancelot Andrewes, Edward Lively and John Harding. The final translations were then exchanged and reviewed, reaching a final committee of six. Supervision of the printing was carried out by Miles Smith and Thomas Bilson. Although the Royal Version appropriates much from the Tyndale, Coverdale, Geneva and Bishops' Bibles, it is unquestionably regarded as the greatest literary translation of the Bible ever produced. Herbert 309; Pforzheimer 61; PMM 114; STC 2216. Arguably the most important book ever published in English. PROVENANCE NOTES: "This Booke belongeth to Shackerstone neer unto Bosworth in Leicestershire", seventeenth century inscription on New Testament title, repeated (in similar wording) on leaves A1 (opening of Genesis) and Z2 (end of Esther). About this Item: Robert Young, 1633. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. FIRST KJV PRINTED IN SCOTLAND: THE HOLY BIBLE CONTAINING THE OLD TESTAMENT AND THE NEW. NEWLY TRANSLATED OUT OF THE ORIGINALL TONGUES. EDINBURGH: PRINTERS TO THE KINGS MOST EXCELLENT MAJESTIE [R. YOUNG], 1633. A fine example of a rare book. The Authorized Version, printed in two columns, woodcut of the royal arms, elaborate engraved title, engraved frontispiece, title to N.T. within woodcut border, woodcut of the royal arms on verso of title to N.T. and again on the last page, woodcut initials and ornaments. A very good full leather binding, original brown calf, spine with five raised bands, hinges and corners carefully strengthened. [Darlow & Moule 368; STC 2311a]. 8 vo. (6.75" x 4.5"). While several earlier editions of the King James New Testament were published in Scotland it was not until 1633 that the first complete King James Bible was published. It coincided with coronation of King Charles I (1600-1649) in Edinburgh. However, there was indignation due to the inclusion of images reminiscent of Catholic piety. Also, its association with Archbishop Laud of Canterbury (1573-1645) and the royal policy of making the predominantly Presbyterian Church of Scotland more ‘English’ in form and ritual was not a selling point. The unpopular Laud – who became notorious for attempting to impose an Anglican liturgy on the Church of Scotland with a Scottish Book of Common Prayer (Laud’s Liturgy) – apparently urged that the King James Bible was to be referred to as ‘The [Arch]bishop of Canterbury’s Bible’. In time, the unadorned King James Bible prevailed in Scotland. This process took place very slowly but was probably complete by the 1660s with the complete restoration of episcopacy in the Church of Scotland. While the slow rate of adoption can be explained in part by continuing attachment to the Geneva Bible, it can equally be attributed to limitations in the supply of Bibles. Few printers were active in Scotland at the time, so abandoning other versions of the Bible in favour of the King James Bible would have resulted in an intolerable shortage of copies and an over-reliance on imports. It was not until 1660 that the King James Bible was mandated for Church use. Along with the Geneva Bible earlier, the King James Bible contributed significantly to the anglicisation of educated speech and writing in Scotland, reinforced by the union of the crowns in 1603 and of the parliaments in 1707. About this Item: Printed for the Authors; And sold by J. Harrison, No.18, Paternoster Row; the Booksellers of Oxford and Cambridge; and all other Booksellers in Great Britain and Ireland., London:, 1779. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Presumed first and only edition.. *** A conundrum *** (see below). Unpaginated: illustrated. OT & Apocrypha: [iv], [916]; NT: [213], [3]; plus a frontis and 49 other engravings. Some browning and offsetting to title page, there are a few patches of foxing (viz Chronicles 2, and a few of the plates), with occasional minor spotting elsewhere, and there is some offsetting from the illustrations to the New Testament. Three of the final leaves have damaged edges, now repaired, but losing a little text. Pages perhaps slightly toned, but contents otherwise clean and in very good order. Although many of the plates have integral titles in English, the engravers, where given (no artists' names present) all appear to be French, except in the NT. In his one-page Preface, the author writes, after asseverating the importance of the Bible: '.a few Words may also be expected respecting this Edition of the Bible, and the Annotations that we have given: But how judiciously soever this Work may appear to be executed, the Public must not consider it as the sole Fruit of the Author's own Genius and Learning, or that of his learned Associates; but as the Comments and Annotations of the most ingenious Men of every Age and Nation. He has called in the Aid and Assistance of every valuable Writer. He has compiled from the Talmudical and Rabbinical Writers among the Jews, and has carefully consulted the Ancient Fathers, and the best Modern Divines, among the Christians.' (etc). In view of the scale and nature of the project, it is perhaps noteworthy that there are only 142 subscribers listed, and that, of these, none are titled, and only 10 are Reverends, although there are a few Esquires. This copy belonged to one of the subscribers, Nathaniel Langborne of Whitby, of whose family and successors there are extensive entries, occupying the verso of the frontis and five blank pages at the back, the latest date recorded being 1903. Square folio (10.5 x 8.5 ins), in the original decorative full calf gilt, rubbed but restored: boards ruled in blind and decorated in blind and gilt, somewhat eroded, newly reconditioned and rebacked with four raised bands, with sections of the original very eroded decorated gilt spine laid down between them. *** N.B.: *** This work is something of a conundrum. There is no record of it in Herbert or the ESTC, or on Copac or WorldCat, or at Lambeth Palace. The 'Rev. Charles Stanhope' does not appear in the The Church of England Clergy database, and there is no record of any Stanhope having been Rector of Brinkworth. However, someone calling himself the Rev. Charles Stanhope does appear as the author of 'The New Polite Tutoress, or, Young Ladies' Best Instructor' of c.1786, as well as having overseen the publication of 'The New Lady's Magazine, or, Polite and Entertaining Companion' which began publication in 1786. Both of these were published by Alexander Hogg, of 16 Paternoster Row, ie: next door to Harrison, the publisher of the present work, reinforcing the likelihood that they are further, if less elevated, endeavours of the same Stanhope. [EXTRA Heavy Item]. Seller Inventory # 17791202
