About this Item: Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Henry Howe (illustrator). Limited Edition Reprint. Early days in King and Queen County, Virginia -- which today encompasses the communities of Bruington, Cauthornville, Indian Neck, Little Plymouth, Mascot, Mattaponi, Newtown, Plain View, Shacklefords, Shanghai, Stevensville, and Walkerton -- are recalled through a mixture of colorful tales and factual data in this NEW 37 page booklet, comprised of excerpts from three rare vintage books: Historical Collections of Virginia by Henry Howe; Twelve Counties of Virginia by John H. Gwathmey; and Virginia, a Guide to the Old Dominion, a WPA Writer's Program publication. The spiral-bound booklet is photocopied on 60# 8 1/2 x11" paper, with the print enlarged to fit the paper. The front cover is protected with a vinyl sheet. The excerpt from the Howe history, printed in 1845, is quite brief. It covers the early development of this area, while excerpts from the WPA book, give a nostalgic glimpse from a 1940 vantage point, including interesting historical notes and sightseeing possibilities. The bulk of this booklet comes from Gwathmey's 1937 contribution, sub-titled "Where the Western Migration Began", a rich resource for the names of early families. Many of these settlers and/or their descendants later migrated to the "western" states of Kentucky, Ohio, etc. Because the booklet is comprised of excerpts from several sources, there may occasionally be duplication of material. Among the many subjects discussed are: Physical Features of the Area, Carter Braxton, signer of Declaration of Independence and non-importation agreement; Religious liberty advocates; School of Donald Robertson near Dunkirk and other schools; Old Church, Mattapony Church and other early churches; the Mattaponi River; Members of the King's Council and the House of Burgesses, and Justices (1830-1860); Colonel George Brooke, Robert Beverley, Judge Thomas Todd; Officers in War of 1812; County Judges; officers in the War Between the States; Major J.R. Bagby, Dr. Bernard Walker and the Home Guard and other incidents during the Civil War; the slaying of Colonel Ulric Dahlgren and the retaliation that followed; Distruction of county records; the new (post CW) courthouse with its 54 portraits and two tablets; The Mount, Canterbury, Locust Grove, Hillsboro, Newington, Laneville, Bel Air, Carrsbrook, Mantua and other old homes and their founders; and other interesting bits of history and trivia. The courthouse portraits include: Judges -- Jones, Jeffries, Foster, Wright, Ruffin, Roane, Tunstall, Spencer, Fleet, Dew, Fleet ; Physicians -- Cox, Gresham, Hoskins, Fauntleroy, and Garnett; Ministers -- Semple, Todd, Broaddus; Military Officers -- Street, Bagby, Pollard, Acree, Dudley, Davis, Courtney, Bland and Bland, Harwood, Spencer, and Campbell; Statesmen -- Braxton, Robinson, Roane; Gresham, Ruffin, Boulware, Hutchinson; College Presidents/Educators -- Dew, Ryland, Southgate; Wilson; County Officers - Porter, Pollard, Pollard, Vaughan; Other Notable Citizens -- Dew, Gresham, 3 Corbins, Garnett, and Pollard. There is an illustration of the King and Queen Courthouse. Seller Inventory # 000222

About this Item: Spiral/Comb. Condition: New. No Jacket. Limited Edition Reprint. If your great great great grandpappy was from King and Queen County, Virginia and fought in the Confederate Army, you just might locate him in this 113 page excerpt from King and Queen County, Virginia, by Alfred Bagby, originally published in 1908. But Civil War buffs really don't need a personal connection to K & Q County to enjoy the personal observations from letters, diaries, and memoirs buried in the pages of this booklet. The spiral bound booklet "Civil War Annals of King & Queen County Virginia" is 5.5" x 8.5" and is photocopied on 60# paper. A vinyl sheet protects the front cover. Extracts from a citizen's diary add a personal touch to events like Kilpatrick's Raid, the Spears Raid and Dahlgren's Raid -- the famous action in which Colonel Ulric Dahlgren of the Union Army was killed. The roster of county soldiers is to be valued and expected, but how a sample of the daily countersigns used at a couple check points. These bits and pieces, gathered by the author from friends and family members, add a personal touch to the exciting happenings of the times. Here's a sample: "5th (Saturday) -- Last night Capt. Bagby sent for me to come to his house to help guard six prisoners captured by him. Maj. E. F. Cooke, Lieut. Merritt, Lieut. Bartley, Privates Hogan, Williams and Litchen, came to the house of his overseer (McFarland), and asked Mrs. M. to prepare them some supper. She immediately began preparations, but privately dispatched a negro girl to acquaint Capt. B. of their presence.Capt. B. and his son John.seized their pistols, ran down to the overseer's and rushed into the room, presenting their pistols and demanding a surrender. Maj. Cooke hesitated, when Capt. Bagby said, "Surrender, or I will kill you," at the same time presenting his pistol at the major's head. It was indeed a trying moment, -- two men against six, and all heavily armed. The major, with great reluctance, threw down his arms, and the rest followed his example.". Seller Inventory # 000434

It begins with the regiment's origins as the 100th Prince Regent's County of Dublin Regiment of Foot, which was raised to fight in the War of 1812-14 against the young United States. Becoming the 100thn Royal Canadian regiment, the unit was stationed in Montreal and Quebec, and then brought to Britain where ity trained at Aldershot and Shorrncliffe before being stationed in Malta and Gibraltar, then India and ireland. It saw service during the Indian Mutiny at the storming of Jhansi, and continued on colonial service in Aden, the Mediterranean, India and Ireland - as well as its native Canada and the West Indies - for the rest of the 19th century. This volume is accompanied by four maps and four illustrations. The end of the year brought the gruelling battles of Passchendaele and Cambrai. In 1918 the regiment withstood the German Spring offensives, before taking part in the victorious allied advance which led to the armistice. Prior to its disbanding in 1922, the regiment was stationed in the occupied Rhineland, in India and was on peac-keeping duties in Silesia, disputed btweeen Germany and Poland. This is a meaty history, which will interest anyone curious about Canada's colonial regiments, and their role in the Great War. Volume II has eight illustrations and fourteen maps.
