Item Description: Little Brown & Co, NY., 1957. Book Condition: Collectible. FINE & FINE. In VG Slipcase. Auburn cloth boards (blind embossed), Tan spines. SIGNED by AUTHOR on specially inscribed presentation card attached inside front cover of Vol I. Black slipcase holds both books. Slipcase presents as nFINE, but is conservatively VG. Front and rear paper labels are in near perfect condition. This set was the property of Reno Nevada writer/historian Agnes Nelson, who was personal friend with Mary Etta Sudgen (Kleberg), heiress to the King Ranch, who lived in Reno during her last years of life; both women were active with regional Nevada and nationally known writers including Robert Laxalt. TIPPED IN: two letters referencing Ms Sudgen (Kleberg)'s last years, her donation of other items to the University of Nevada and to the Nevada Historical Society. A letter from Ms Nelson to Tom Lea dated 1983 notes she owned this set of "The King Ranch" (gifted from Mary Etta Sudgen), and asking for his autograph to place inside the set. He sent her a large card hand written in his beautifully flourished styled artistic handwriting, "Inscribed for Anges M. Nelson for her to place in her copy of The King Ranch -- with best wishes Tom Lea El Paso". Decorated endpapers. A fascinating and unique set with Tom Lea signature and letters; books owned by a King Ranch family member. The books are a renowned history of one of America's most famous land holdings, the Kleberg family's King Ranch, which did so much for Texas and the nation in commerce, education, science, oil, and resources development. A special King family set. Special extra - added copy of Vol2, no jacket. nFINE. [see also another scarce Tom Lea signed book offered by Sierra Rose Antiques: "The Wonderful Country"]. [B187]. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 007277
