About this Item: Cassell & Company, Limited, London, Paris, New York, and Melbourne, 1885. Full-Leather. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. None (illustrator). First Edition. This is the SECOND ISSUE OF the first edition although in a mixed state with first issue ads (5G.8.85) in the back of the book but second printing sheets. Book has been rebound in full leather with five raised spine bands and gold tooling designs and lettering. There is a tipped in note on stationary signed by Haggard, it reads: 5 Sept: 1916, Dear Berney Fichlias (not sure of spelling), That is very kind of you- We should much like to see his (can't make out word) & Yourselves -I think he was my nephew godfrey's chief. I suppose (can't make out word) the will appear about 3 (can't make out the two words above the name) SIGNED H. Rider Haggard" The stationary is from Ditchingham House, Norfolk, it also has a small stamp of hieroglyphics on the paper. The colored folding map is present and attached to the title page, 320 pages plus 16 pages of ads with two pages unopened. Wonderful copy of a classic work by Haggard along with his AUTOGRAPH. This appears to be an anomaly as the ads are the same as called for in the first printing although the misspelled words/gramatical errors were in the first 2 printings and the third printing is not supposed to have the ads???? Beautiful binding which incudes matching marbled end-papers and paste-downs. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 000093

About this Item: London Cassell & Company, Limited 1885, 1885. First edition, third issue with the corrected text and catalogue to the rear dated "5 G. 10.8". From the estate of Haggard's sister, Ella Green, signed by Haggard to the page facing the half-title with some ink offset to the half-title, below the signature a fragment of a letter has been pasted reading: "your loving brother H. Rider Haggard" and above that a small square of paper has been pasted which features some hieroglyphics of unknown significance. The book is bound in the publisher's cloth, which has been repaired and restored, chiefly to the spine which has had some filling at the ends, the boards are slightly rubbed and the spine is toned and faded. The text block is toned and foxed with some repairs to the map, also some marks and minor damage to a few other pages. Haggard's most famous title, uncommon signed, with excellent association and provenance. Seller Inventory # 3529
