Item Description: Imprint Society, Barre, MA, 1970. Hardcover. Book Condition: g+ to vg. Limited Edition. 1/1950. Quarto. 216pp. Original half leatherette over illustrated cloth, with gold lettering on spine. Book housed in its gilt-stamped olive cloth slipcase. Limitation page signed by David Gentleman. One of 1,950 copies, of which this one is unnumbered. Touted by its 1885 publisher as "the most amazing story ever written," King Solomon's Mines was one of the bestselling novels of the nineteenth century. H. Rider Haggard's thrilling saga of elephant hunter Allan Quatermain and his search for fabled treasure is more than just an adventure story, it is a vivid portray of the alliances and battles of white colonials and African tribesmen. King Solomon's Mines "brings us the world of extremes, of the absurdly tall tales and of the illogical loyalty between disparate people that still informs this part of the world." The novel tells of a search of an unexplored region of Africa by a group of adventurers led by Allan Quatermain for the missing brother of one of the party. The men find danger, hardship, myth, lost tribes, cruel kings, and evil sorceress, and overcome all. Through a series of adventures the men escape near-certain death, with pocketfuls of diamonds from "King Solomon's Mines", enough to make them rich for life. It is the first English adventure novel set in Africa, and is considered to be the genesis of the Lost World literary genre. This is the first book in what was to be a long running and prolific series. This edition is splendidly illustrated throughout with numerous b/w in-text illustrations and full-page color plates by David Gentleman. Minor shelf wear and soiling to slipcase. Slight age-toning along cloth. Slipcase and binding in overall good+, interior in very good condition. Bookseller Inventory # 38877

Item Description: Cassell & Company, Limited, London, Paris, New York, and Melbourne, 1885. Full-Leather. Book Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. None (illustrator). First Edition. This is the SECOND ISSUE OF the first edition although in a mixed state with first issue ads (5G.8.85) in the back of the book but second printing sheets. Book has been rebound in full leather with five raised spine bands and gold tooling designs and lettering. There is a tipped in note on stationary signed by Haggard, it reads: 5 Sept: 1916, Dear Berney Fichlias (not sure of spelling), That is very kind of you- We should much like to see his (can't make out word) & Yourselves -I think he was my nephew godfrey's chief. I suppose (can't make out word) the will appear about 3 (can't make out the two words above the name) SIGNED H. Rider Haggard" The stationary is from Ditchingham House, Norfolk, it also has a small stamp of hieroglyphics on the paper. The colored folding map is present and attached to the title page, 320 pages plus 16 pages of ads with two pages unopened. Wonderful copy of a classic work by Haggard along with his AUTOGRAPH. This appears to be an anomaly as the ads are the same as called for in the first printing although the misspelled words/gramatical errors were in the first 2 printings and the third printing is not supposed to have the ads???? Beautiful binding which incudes matching marbled end-papers and paste-downs. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 000093
