Item Description: New Century, New Jersey, 1983. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. Presumed First Edition. Inscribed and SIGNED by the author at the half title page. Advance review copy with publisher's slip laid in. Fine in grey cloth boards in a like dust jacket, unclipped in mylar sleeve. A note for fellow obsessives regarding the confusing "11 12 13" etc. "printing code" used by the publisher. Most book sellers understandably assume this to read as the eleventh printing(!) in year of publication and we haven't yet seen a used copy listed as anything other. Our copy states the same info but this doesn't square with it being an author-signed presentation and publisher's review copy which came from the inventory of pioneer jazz book seller, Arthur Newman, who routinely received signed advance review copies from publishers. Because every copy listed appears to begin with 11 we think this is just an unconventional way to state first edition, first printing, followed by 12, first edition, second, etc. The publishing company now appears to be defunct, so that's our theory and we're stickin' to it until superior insight intervenes. The first comprehensive biography of Whiteman who, though decidely not "The King" of jazz, was the most influential popular orchestra leader and talent scout of the the 20's and 30's. He employed some of the best jazz musicians of the day, including Jack Teagarden and famously, Bix Beiderbecke, as well as giving Bing Crosby his start as a singer and commissioning Gerswin's "Rhapsody In Blue", premiered by his orchestra in New York in 1924 with the composer at the piano. Uncommon signed advance review copy. presumed first edition. J1484 Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Signed by Author. Bookseller Inventory # 001484
