About this Item: Catholic Press, Beirut, 1897. Hard Back Binding. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. 383 pp., 3 pp., Arabic & Syriac text within borders, modern hard back binding, gilt title on spine, newly bound, in very good condition. The first scholarly large-scale Syriac grammar to be published, and the first to be edited by a Lebanese scholar and to be printed and published by a Lebanese printer. Earlier Syriac grammars were those by Ambrosius (1539; very disorderly and combined with Armenian), Widmanstetter (1555), and Fabricius Boderianus (1572)- both very elementary; and Masius (1571) and Waser (1593). They all assumed a working knowledge of Hebrew as a basis to study Syriac language. This dictionary was written by a Lebanese grammarian, who graduated from the famous School of Rome. In his introduction, he states that he was in contact with leading figures and experts in Syriac linguistics, and he also studied nearly forty books on the Syriac language. His references are many including Yacub al- Rahawi, Ibn Zu’bi, Elia al-Tirhani, Ibn al-Ibri and Serjios al-Razzi. Copac lists one copy only at the University of Cambridge Library. Size: 8vo.
