Item Description: 1935. Racine, Wisconsin: Artists and Writers Guild, n.d. [ca 1935]. Original color-pictorial spiral-bound flexible card covers. First Artists & Writers edition (spiral-bound) of what many consider to be Maxfield Parrish's ultimate achievement in book form. The oversize (12" x 10") plates, in luminous color, are magnificent.~This A&W edition is often described as having been published in 1925, because the book's only date, is where it reads "Copyright 1925 by Charles Scribner's Sons." However, this Artists and Writers edition was published a whole decade later -- in 1935-1936, and in Poughkeepsie not in Racine. The original (first) edition was indeed published by Scribner in 1925 -- a regular hardbound book. Western Printing Company of Racine Wisconsin had acquired Whitman Publishing in 1916, to issue inexpensive juvenile books; in the early 1930s, Western also acquired Artists and Writers Guild of Poughkeepsie, New York -- not a "guild" at all, but a printer then specializing in playing cards and greeting cards. 1935-1936 was the first year of children's book production for Artists and Writers Guild in Poughkeepsie, and their list for that first year consisted of 28 titles, including this one -- available both spiral-bound (as here) or with a regular card-cover binding.~This copy is in very good-plus condition (lower fore-corner of the front cover creased, small scuff on the right-hand baker's sleeve). A 1" dogear crease on the lower front cover corner. A 1" closed tear in the front cover near the spine. The first 6 or so holes at the top for the spiral binding of the front cover have torn as have the bottom 4 holes. This effects the front cover only. The rear cover lower corner has a light 1-1/2" dogear crease. The covers have tanned a bit with age. The interior pages are free from creasing or tears. A tiny bit of wear from page turning but no thumb dents or soiling. Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1925. Handsomely bound in large quarto boards, in sturdy black cloth with the glorious paste-down cover painting by Maxfield Parrish. Black cloth spine with some damage to the bottom 1". With a touch of foxing to the front center and right-hand corner of the paste-down. The rear boards have some light stray marks. Internally the book is exceptionally clean, bright, and printed on heavy white stock which splendidly displays the luminous colors of Maxfield Parrish's illustrations. With 15 full-page plates, and 8 third-page plates, colorful endpapers, and the frontispiece with its original tissue guard present. Slight separations to the occasional signature; otherwise, a superb production. Note: Louise Saunders was the wife of the renowned Scribner's editor Maxwell Perkins who nurtured and advised Scott Fitzgerald, Ernest Hemingway, and Thomas Wolfe, among many others. "Not until 1920 did [Parrish] agree to illustrate what was to become one of the most valuable children's books ever published, Louise Saunders's Knave of Hearts. Saunders was the wife of Maxwell Perkins, the literary editor at Scribner's. They summered in Cornish, New Hampshire, and were friends with the Parrishes. In a letter to J. H. Chapin of Scribner's, Parrish wrote on October 24, 1920: 'The reason I wanted to illustrate the Knave of Hearts was on account of the bully opportunity it gives for a very good time making the pictures. Imagination could run riot, not bound down by the period, just good fun and all sorts of things. You must understand all this layout to be in gorgeous color. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lining--a very beautiful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, waterfall, rocks and mountains.' Parrish relished working three years on the twenty-six paintings for the Knave of Hearts. He built an elaborate castle model in his fully equipped workroom to use in the illustrations for the book. Many of the fixtures in the illustrations show handcrafted items from the Parrish household, such as elaborate hinges and a wonderful clocklike affair that Parrish had built to let him know when the main house ran out of well water. Knave of Hearts, published in October 1925, was printed in rich colors on heavy coated paper. The illustrations were the highest quality reproductions that could be printed" (Alma Gilbert, Maxfield Parrish: The Masterworks, pp. 49-52). Ludwig, p. 206." First Edition with matching dates of 1925 on the title and copyright pages as well as the Scribner Seal at the bottom of the copyright page. Bookseller Inventory # 401

VG (book in very good condition) Folio (approx. 12 inches to 15 inches Cloth Binding SAUNDERS, Louise PARRISH, Maxfield Knave of Hearts With pictures by Maxfield Parrish New York Charles Scribners Sons 1925. Knave of Hearts Knave ofHearts. With Pictures by Maxfield Parrish. New York: Charles Scribners Sons, 1925. First edition. mm.). [6], 46, [1], [3, blank] pp. Illustrated throughout with full color plate illustrations. Original black cloth with color pictorial label on front cover. Color pictorial endpapers. A tight square bright copy, overall a very good copy. "Not until 1920 did [Parrish] agree to illustrate what was to become one of the most valuable childrens books ever published, Louise Saunderss Knave of Hearts. Saunders was the wife of Maxwell Perkins, the editor of Scribners. They summered in Cornish, New Hampshire, and were friends with the Parrishes. In a letter to J.H. Chapin of Scribners, Parrish wrote on October 24, 1920: . Imagination could run riot, not bound down by the pe- riod, just good fun and all sorts of things. You must understand all this layout to be in gorgeous color. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lininga very beauti- ful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, water- fall, rocks and mountains. Parrish relished working three years on the twenty-six paintings for Knave of Hearts. He built an elaborate castle model in his fully equipped workroom to use in the illustrations for the book. Many of the fixtures in the illustrations show handcrafted items from the Parrish household, such as elaborate hinges and a wonderful clocklike affair.that Parrish had built to let him know when the main house ran out of well water.Knave of Hearts, published in October 1925, was printed in rich colors on heavy coated paper. The illustrations were the highest quality reproductions that could be printed" This copy has tiny restorations to pictorial label and to the gilt and black cloth. Superb Parrish, among his best, the problem is that most copies have gone the way of all flesh and breakers and are now rare whole, the cheaper spiral bound issue sells now for up to 1,000, this is an ideal copy to keep in unity, lacks the rare dust jacket and original box which boosts the price far beyond most copies. Size: Folio - over 12" - 15" tall. Private Press. Bookseller Inventory # 1000205

Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1925. Book Condition: Near Fine. First edition. A Near Fine copy of the book that suffers from light to moderate foxing throughout (and on the front cover illustration). Original black cloth with mounted cover illustration and pictorial endpapers. Complete with the full complement of illustrations by Maxfield Parrish, his last and most brilliant book illustration project. Oddly, the title page of this copy is printed out of register, so that the font and images are blurry. We have never seen a copy like this and suspect that it was an error caught very early on in the print run.Parrish worked for three years on the illustrations for the book, creating an elaborate model of the castle to use for his inspiration. In agreeing to work on the project, Parrish wrote: "You must understand all this layout to be in gorgeous color. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lining - a very beautiful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, waterfall, rocks and mountains." (Letter from Oct. 24, 1920 to H. Chapin of Scribner's). Near Fine. Bookseller Inventory # 1578
