Item Description: 1935. Racine, Wisconsin: Artists and Writers Guild, n.d. [ca 1935]. Original color-pictorial spiral-bound flexible card covers. First Artists & Writers edition (spiral-bound) of what many consider to be Maxfield Parrish's ultimate achievement in book form. The oversize (12" x 10") plates, in luminous color, are magnificent.~This A&W edition is often described as having been published in 1925, because the book's only date, is where it reads "Copyright 1925 by Charles Scribner's Sons." However, this Artists and Writers edition was published a whole decade later -- in 1935-1936, and in Poughkeepsie not in Racine. The original (first) edition was indeed published by Scribner in 1925 -- a regular hardbound book. Western Printing Company of Racine Wisconsin had acquired Whitman Publishing in 1916, to issue inexpensive juvenile books; in the early 1930s, Western also acquired Artists and Writers Guild of Poughkeepsie, New York -- not a "guild" at all, but a printer then specializing in playing cards and greeting cards. 1935-1936 was the first year of children's book production for Artists and Writers Guild in Poughkeepsie, and their list for that first year consisted of 28 titles, including this one -- available both spiral-bound (as here) or with a regular card-cover binding.~This copy is in very good-plus condition (lower fore-corner of the front cover creased, small scuff on the right-hand baker's sleeve). Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, NY, 1925. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine with no dust jacket. Illustrated by Maxfield Parrish, (illustrator). First Edition. Color Illustrations; 4to 11" - 13" tall; Collates complete [6], 46, [1], [3, blank] pages. Color frontispiece (included in pagination) , with tissue guard, and color illustrations (fifteen full-pageincluding frontis and tp). Original black cloth hard cover with color pictorial label on front cover. Color pictorial endpapers. Signed neatly by Anne Marie O'Connor 1929 on "This is the Book of-" page. If you hold the book's leaves at an angle to the light you can just see a few spots where the slick coating has slightly dulled. Minor crease at the tip of the front end paper and short tape repair. Very light foxing to blank eps and a few leaves with light aging to edges. All in all it is about as close to perfect as you can get. A truly outstanding example. Large quarto (13.9125 x 11.4375 inches). "Not until 1920 did [Parrish] agree to illustrate what was to become one of the most valuable children's books ever published, Louise Saunders's Knave of Hearts. Saunders was the wife of Maxwell Perkins, the editor of Scribner's. They summered in Cornish, New Hampshire, and were friends with the Parrishes. In a letter to J. H. Chapin of Scribner's, Parrish wrote on October 24, 1920: 'The reason I wanted to illustrate the Knave of Hearts was on account of the bully opportunity it gives for a very good time making the pictures. Imagination could run riot, not bound down by the period, just good fun and all sorts of things. You must understand all this layout to be in gorgeous color. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lining-a very beautiful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, waterfall, rocks and mountains.' Parris relished working three years on the twenty-six paintings for the Knave of Hearts. He built an elaborate castle model in his fully equipped workroom to use in the illustrations for the book. Many of the fixtures in the illustrations show handcrafted items from the Parrish household, such as elaborate hinges and a wonderful clocklike affair.that Parrish had built to let him know when the main house ran out of well water.Knave of Hearts, published in October 1925, was printed in rich colors on heavy coated paper. The illustrations were the highest quality reproductions that could be printed" (Alma Gilbert, Maxfield Parrish: The Masterworks, pp. 49-52). Ludwig, p. 206." ; 0. Bookseller Inventory # 32546

Item Description: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1925. Book Condition: Near Fine. First edition. A Near Fine copy of the book that suffers from light to moderate foxing throughout (and on the front cover illustration). Original black cloth with mounted cover illustration and pictorial endpapers. Complete with the full complement of illustrations by Maxfield Parrish, his last and most brilliant book illustration project. Oddly, the title page of this copy is printed out of register, so that the font and images are blurry. We have never seen a copy like this and suspect that it was an error caught very early on in the print run.Parrish worked for three years on the illustrations for the book, creating an elaborate model of the castle to use for his inspiration. In agreeing to work on the project, Parrish wrote: "You must understand all this layout to be in gorgeous color. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lining - a very beautiful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, waterfall, rocks and mountains." (Letter from Oct. 24, 1920 to H. Item Description: New York Charles Scribner's Sons 1925, 1925. First edition and the best issue bound in cloth and oversized. Decorated with a beautiful colourplate pictorial cover, stunning pictorial endleaves and a profusion of very fine colour illustrations throughout by Maxfield Parrish. 4to, (350 x 295 mm), publisher’s original black cloth with the full size pictorial colour pastedown on the upper cover, and colour illustrated endpapers. (47) pp. A handsome copy with the head and tail of the spine in very nice condition, some minor mellowing to the black cloth and pastedown and some bumping to the corners, otherwise very bright and clean and well preserved. THE FIRST EDITION OF THIS BRILLIANT ILLUSTRATED BOOK. Perhaps Parrish's best work, and certainly a very scarce book in nice condition. As Parrish himself said, "The reason I wanted to illustrate THE KNAVE OF HEARTS was on account of the bully opportunity it gives for a very good time making the pictures. Imagination could run riot, bound down by no period, just good fun and all sorts of things." Quoted in Ludwig, p. 48. For sixty-five years Parrish worked in widely varied fields---book illustration, magazine illustration, posters and advertisements, paintings and murals---rendering realm of the imagination with sharp-focus realism. So well known and popular was his work F. Scott Fitzgerald , for example, described the reflection in a restaurant window as being the color of ‘Maxfield Parrish moonlight.’. Saunders was the wife of Maxwell Perkins, the editor of Scribner's. They summered in Cornish, New Hampshire, and were friends with the Parrishes. In a letter to J.H. The landscapes back of the figures in the cover lining-a very beautiful affair illuminated by a golden late afternoon sun: castles, waterfall, rocks and mountains.' Parrish relished working three years on the twenty-six paintings for Knave of Hearts. He built an elaborate castle model in his fully equipped workroom to use in the illustrations for the book? Many of the fixtures in the illustrations show handcrafted items from the Parrish household, such as elaborate hinges and a wonderful clocklike affair? that Parrish had built to let him know when the main house ran out of well water? Knave of Hearts, published in October 1925, was printed in rich colors on heavy coated paper. The illustrations were the highest quality reproductions that could be printed" (Alma Gilbert, Maxfield Parrish: The Masterworks, pp. 49-52). Bookseller Inventory # 02750

Illustrated throughout with magnificent full-page and vignette color illustrations by Parrish. A very fine copy with the fragile cover label as new. This copy housed in the original publisher's box from A.L.BURT COMPANY. The bottom of the box is missing two end flaps. The lid is missing an end flap and a side flap. Lid with some sunning, but the title label is bright. There is no indication anywhere in the book of any relationship with A.L. Burt, and we have never seen any reference to any copy in a Burt box.
