About this Item: London - Chapman and Hall, 1847. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. A half brown leather hardback with gilt lettering on the spine. Charles James Lever was an Irish novelist and a prolific writer much influenced in his early years by Maria Edgeworth and Sir Walter Scott. Lever produced thirty novels and five volumes of short stories and essays; he is best remembered for his farcical, lighthearted picaresque novels of Irish military life, notably Harry Lorrequer (1839), Charles O'Malley (1841), Jack Hinton (1843), and Tom Burke (1844). Hablot Knight Browne was an English artist, famous as Phiz, the illustrator of the best-known books by Charles Dickens, Charles Lever and Harrison Ainsworth in their original editions. Condition: The binding is tight with both coversfirmly attached. A couple of pages are detached, but otherwise all pages are secure. There is some wear to the extremities, including bumping to the corners, mild cracking and fraying to the spine and scratches and rubbing to the boards. There is some slight splitting on the top of the front hinge. The marbled paper on the boards is all but gone. Internally the pages are generally clean with the occasional handling marks. There is brown spotting and offsetting predominantly on the first and last few pages and plates. There are some pencil and ink inscriptions on the front endpapers. Overall the condition of this volume is good. Seller Inventory # 005322
