The Second Edition, with Additions; and corrected throughout. By the Right Reverend Father in GOD, Thomas, Lord Bishop of Sodor and Man. Advertisement. Dedication page to John, Lord Archbishop of Canterbury, & President. Dedication to The Honourable the Trustees of the Colony of Georgia. Decorative head pieces and initials, historiated end pieces. Thomas Wilson (1663-1755) was Bishop of Sodor and Man from 1697-1755. He was recognized for his work to improve moral and religious conduct of his people. During a visit of London in 1735 he met James Edward Oglethorpe, British soldier, Member of Parliament and founder of the Colony of Georgia. It was the beginning of Wilson's interest in foreign missions. "The Knowledge and Practice of Christianity.", written in 1740, was published in numerous editions. In 1745 he became a member of the Georgia Trustees himself.Some foxing of pages at front and end and sporadic throughout block. Page xxxvi with tears mended by transparent tape. Gilt seal bookplate of Fred Robison Heryer. Light scattered wear, Near Fine. This work presents the fundamentals of Christianity for Indians in Georgia. The Dedication to the Trustees of the Colony of Georgia states that Wilson wrote the Essay "at the Instance of James Oglethorpe." The Preface elaborates on his conversation with Oglethorpe about "the Condition, Temper, and Genius of the Indians in the Neighbourhood of Georgia." Second edition, with additions, and corrected throughout. Sabin 104691: "Wilson's work was frequently reprinted during the succeeding century, passing through more than twenty editions." Meant "for propagating the Gospel amongst Indians and Negroes," the book is dedicated "To the Honourable the Trustees of the Colony of Georgia" and states that "This essay .
