"Kon-Tiki is the record of an astonishing adventure—a journey of 4,300 nautical miles across the Pacific Ocean by raft. Intrigued by Polynesian folklore, biologist Thor Heyerdahl suspected that the South Sea Islands had been settled by an ancient race from thousands of miles to the east, led by a mythical hero, Kon-Tiki. He decided to prove his theory by duplicating the legendary voyage. On April 28, 1947, Heyerdahl and five other adventurers sailed from Peru on a balsa log raft. After three months on the open sea, encountering raging storms, whales, and sharks, they sighted land—the Polynesian island of Puka Puka. Translated into sixty-five languages, Kon-Tiki is a classic, inspiring tale of daring and courage—a magnificent saga of men against the sea."; 8.40 X 5.60 X 1.30 inches; 304 pages. First Edition/First Printing (Rand McNally "A" present on the verso). Kon-Tiki was the raft used by Norwegian explorer and writer Thor Heyerdahl in his 1947 expedition across the Pacific Ocean from South America to the Polynesian islands. It was named after the Inca sun god, Viracocha, for whom "Kon-Tiki" was said to be an old name. Thor Heyerdahl (1914 -2002) was a Norwegian adventurer and ethnographer with a background in zoology, botany, and geography. He became notable for his Kon-Tiki expedition in 1947, in which he sailed 8,000 km (5,000 mi) across the Pacific Ocean in a hand-built raft from South America to the Tuamotu Islands. The expedition was designed to demonstrate that ancient people could have made long sea voyages, creating contacts between separate cultures. This was linked to a diffusionist model of cultural development. Heyerdahl subsequently made other voyages designed to demonstrate the possibility of contact between widely separated ancient people. He was appointed a government scholar in 1984. Bookplate of Peter Antony Lanyon-Orgill on verso of top cover. , Size : 4to (246x182mm). , Complete with numerous photographs and maps (several are colour folding maps). Seller Inventory # 009442

About this Item: Chicago: Rand McNally & Company, 1950, 1950. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, blind-stamped design to front cover. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the dust jacket, spine panel lightly faded, extremities very slightly chipped. With 20 leaves of photographic plates. First US edition, originally published in Norway in 1948. The Kon-Tiki expedition was undertaken by the explorer Thor Heyerdahl to prove that Polynesia was settled from South America by a mixed race who travelled by raft. Their replica raft, named after the Incan sun god Kon-Tiki, was wrecked on a reef 98 days later. "A dramatic, designedly primitive, and adventure-filled voyage, this was the prototype for other voyages designed to prove various things about ancient people and voyages" (Toy). As the author observes, the trip proved that the journey by raft was possible, even if it does not irrefutably prove that it was by this means that the Pacific islands were settled. His account has since become a classic, and the raft is now preserved in the Kon-Tiki museum of Oslo. Lyon's translation was also published the same year in Britain by Allen & Unwin, without known primacy. With a tipped in 16 page magazine special feature on the voyage. Toy, A Nautical Bibliography, 646. Seller Inventory # 123671
