Insecta (1858-1910).; Andra Delen. Zoologi. 2. Arachnider (1910); Andra Delen. Zoologi. 3. Annulater (1857-1910). Tredje Delen. Fysik (1858-1910); Första Delen. Botanik (1857-1910). In this voyage, the Frigate Eugenie was the first Swedish vessel to complete a circumnavigation of the Globe. Captained by Rear Admiral Christian Adolf Virgin (1797-1870), and with a crew of 340, the ship left Europe in October, 1851, stopping at Rio Janeiro and La Plata, passed through the Straits of Magellan, then on to Valparaiso, the Gallapagos, Panama, the Sandwich Islands, San Francisco, Otaheite, the Friendly Islands and Sydney, then into the Indian Ocean and from Australia she went to the Caralinas and the Ladrones, Canton, Manila, Singapore, Batavia, and the Mauritius. Nils Johan Andersson (1821-1880) was chief Botanist, the zoological work was directed by Johan Gustaf Hjalmar Kinberg (1820-1908), and the physical science observations were conducted by Anders Jonas Ångström, Karl Johan Johansson, and Carl Skogman. Though much of the material was published in pieces in the nineteenth century, the work did not reach this final form until this edition of 1910. Very good or better mostly unopened (uncut) and untrimmed copies, minor edge wear, scattered foxing, mainly marginal, including a few plates, mostly in the Insecta volume, else plates and maps about fine. Uncut copy in original printed wrappers. First edition of the scientific results of the first organized Swedish circumnavigation undertaken during the years 1851-53. Several distinguished scientists participated on this world cruise under the command of C.A. Virgin. The expedition visited South America, Panama, Galapagos Islands, California, Hawaii, Tahiti, Australia, HongKong, Canton, the Philippines, Mauritius and the Cape. This scientific report contains three parts; Botany, Zoology and Physics devoted to hydrography, meteorology and geomagnetism. Includes a.o. an interesting account of the Galapagos Islands' vegetation by the expedition's botanist N.J. Andersson (including 16 fine lithographs), important parts about insects by Bohemian, Wallengren, Holmgren etc. and interesting meteorological as well as hydrographical observations by the astronomer Skogman.
