Item Description: Washington: Administrations-Tryckeriets Officin, 1867., 1867. 8vo., (9 x 5 4/8 inches). With large folding lithographed map of the "United States and Territories. Shewing the Extent of Public Surveys and other Details. under the Direction of Joseph S. Wilson, Commissioner. Washington D.C: 1866" (some separations at folds, some light spotting). Original brown cloth, gilt (worn with minor loss at the head and foot of the spine). The German issue of "Report of the Commissioner of the General Land Office" for 1867, and including the large folding map the United States at the end of the Civil War, dated October 2nd 1866, and showing valuable mineral deposits and railroads. Founded in 1812 the General Land Office oversaw the surveying, platting and sale of the public lands in the Western United States and administered the Homestead Act and the Preemption Act in disposal of public lands. The plethora of Public Land sales in the 19th century American west led to the expression "Land Office business", meaning a booming trade. "The western part of the country is the most interesting in this map, especially the progress of the railroads and the delineation of the Indian Territory and its various subdivisions." (Streeter). With the organization of the United States Department of the Interior in 1849, Joseph S. Wilson became Chief Clerk of the General Land Office. He was appointed Commissioner of the General Land Office 1860-1861 and then again 1866-1871. Streeter 3927. Bookseller Inventory # 72map93
