Item Description: London, C. Ackers for J. Wilcox, 1734., 1734. Large 4to. (4), IX, (3), 187, (1), 508, (16) pp. With folding engr. map, folding engr. plate, and 3 (2 folding) engr. genealogical tables. Modern half calf with marbled covers, gilt. First printing of this important translation. "Showered with praise from the start" (cf. Enay). "The classic translation of the Quran [.] Sale worked from the original Arabic, but also used Marracci's Latin version, about which he said it was very precise, but too literal [.] Sale's translation is marked by a rather sober tidiness. Sale himself saw his work as a sort of defence of a much-maligned book [.] The translation's dispassionate, dry objectivity was an enormous step forward for western Quranic studies. Its deserved success was based to no little extent on the 'Preliminary Discourse', which provides a general introduction to the Quran as well as an overview of the most important Muslim denominations [.] For a century this account remained one of the principal sources from which the European educated elite drew its knowledge of all matters Quranic" (cf. Fück). - Title page slightly wrinkled and dusty. A good, very unobtrusively browned copy in an appealing modern binding. Chauvin X, 146. Schnurrer 429. Fück 104f. Enay 169. Graesse IV, 44. Ebert 11524. Bookseller Inventory # 33478

Item Description: Tehran, 1846. size circa 31 x 21 cm -- printed in Tehran, in the printing press of Haji Ali Mohammad-i in 1262 (1846) -- 220 leaves. - with handwritten dedication as a present in Ramadan dated from 1278 (1862) on title page. -- A very rare and early example of early book printing in Tehran, where the first lithographic printing press started not before 1837. "In Tehran the first lithographed item was the newspaper called Kagad-eakbar (lit. newspaper) published by Mirza Saleh in 1837. There were only three issues, and these came out in Moharram-Jomada I 1253/May-August 1837 (Sadr-Hasemi I, no. 37). As far as printing of books is concerned, the first publications are datable to 1838." (Encyclopaedia Iranica) -- modern half-linen binding, preserving the original leather boards. -- a few pages have old handwritten marginal notes, occasionally stained in places, finger soiling throughout, first and last leaves some more stained, 2 leaves loose, first and last leaves with marginal tears -- otherwise in good condition. -- Printed books from Islamic presses in Iran from the 19th century are extremely rare. Item Description: London: by C. Ackers for J. Wilcox, 1734, 1734. Quarto (248 x 190 mm). Contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked with the original gilt-tooled spine laid down, raised bands, title gilt to second compartment, rolled gilt border enclosing decorative blind panel to sides, red sprinkled edges. Light craquelure to darkened spine, sides and extremities lightly rubbed and scuffed, title page slightly browned, very small closed tear to folding map stub, a few trivial marks to contents, but otherwise remarkably crisp and fresh internally. A very good copy. Title-page printed in red and black, folding map of Arabia, 3 genealogical plates of which 2 folding, one folding plan of Mecca. First edition of Sale's Qur'an, the first English translation of the Qur'an to be made directly from the Arabic, and the basis for all subsequent English editions until the mid-nineteenth century; previously the only complete English translation had been Alexander Ross's 1649 version, which relied solely on the 1647 French edition by Alexandre du Ryer. George Sale was a solicitor and "the first notable English Arabist who was not in holy orders From 1726 to 1734 he was closely associated with the Society for the Propagation of Christian Knowledge, which he served in his legal capacity. Meanwhile he was working on a translation of the Qur'an a landmark in the history of Qur'anic studies" (Holt, Studies in the History of the Near East, p. 58). Sale was textually indebted to the 1698 Latin translation of Ludovico Marracci, confessor to Pope Innocent XI; notably, his citation of Muslim commentators is restricted to those already mentioned by his predecessor. Yet Sale's work, and in particular his extensive Preliminary Discourse discussing both the biography of the Prophet and the Arabian context of Islam, displays "an enlightened and objective attitude which may have been responsible for his gradual dissociation from the activities of the SPCK", in contrast to the openly polemical intentions of Marracci, whose prefaced offered a lengthy refutation of the Qur'an and Muhammad's prophethood (ibid.) Sale's balanced presentation of Muhammad and Islamic origins was much admired by his contemporaries, including Voltaire, Lessing and especially Gibbon, whose treatment of Arabian history and Islam in his Decline and Fall relies heavily on Sale. In 1921 Edward Denison Ross claimed that Sale's version had still not been superseded, and more than fifty years later Sale's objectivity guarded him from criticism in Edward Said's Orientalism (1978). Provenance: ownership inscription of "Wm Woodforde, Galhampton House" to the front pastedown, above the later ownership inscription "Jane Woodforde, Ansford House, 1845". William (1758-1844) was the nephew of the noted Somerset clergyman James (1740-1803), whose diaries (mentioning William) were rediscovered and published in the early 20th century as The Diary of a Country Parson, and have been widely studied for its "incomparably vivid picture of country life and manners" (ODNB): an interesting provenance hinting at Sale's wide contemporary readership and the growing interest in Islam across 18th-century England. Item Description: Bath Printed by S. Hazard for J. Johnson, Vernor and Hood, Ogilvy and Speare et al 1795, 1795. 2 volumes. An early and very scarce printing of George Sale's great English translation. With three engraved genealogical tables (two folding), a map and a folding plate featuring a view and the plan of the Temple of Mecca, all as in the first edition. 8vo, very handsome full contemporary speckled calf, compartments of the spines elegantly decorated in elaborate panel designs with gilt decorated bands and fine central gilt ornamental devices, gilt rolled border designs, two compartments with contrasting red and green morocco labels ruled and lettered in gilt, board edges gilt stippled, covers with roll tooled borders gilt, marbled endleaves. Vol. I: xii, (2), 266, Table 14 pp. ; Vol. II: (8), 519, Table 12 pp. An especially fine and exceptionally handsome set in beautiful contemporary bindings. The bindings are in excellent condition, the text blocks and paper remain fresh, clean, unpressed and in beautiful condition, near as pristine. VERY RARE IN THIS CONDITION. Sale's version, originally published some years earlier, is the best early translation of the Islamic holy book, and the first English translation taken directly from the original Arabic. The only translation published previous to Sale's was "the despicable French version" of André Du Ryer, issued in 1649, and Alexander Ross published an English version derived from Du Ryer's in the same year. Sale’s intent in translating the Koran was seemingly to educate English readers (and perhaps those in power) about Islam in an atmosphere of what he perceived to be ignorance and intolerance: ".it seems as if there was something more than what is vulgarly imagined, in a religion which has made so surprising a progress." He states, ".as Mohammed gave his Arabs the best religion he could, as well as the best laws, preferable, at least, to those of the ancient pagan lawgivers, I confess I cannot see why he deserves not equal respect, though not with Moses or Jesus Christ, whose laws came really from heaven, yet with Minos or Numa, notwithstanding the distinction of a learned writer, who seems to think it a greater crime to make use of an imposture to set up a new religion, founded on the acknowledgment of one true God, and to destroy idolatry, than to use the same means to gain reception to rules and regulations for the more orderly practice of heathenism already established." He goes on to argue that ".if the religious and civil Institutions of foreign nations are worth our knowledge, those of Mohammed, the lawgiver of the Arabians, and founder of an empire, which, in less than a century, spread itself over a greater part of the world than the Romans were ever masters of, must needs be so.".
