About this Item: London, C. Ackers for J. Wilcox, 1734., 1734. Large 4to. (4), IX, (3), 187, (1), 508, (16) pp. With folding engr. map, folding engr. plate, and 3 (2 folding) engr. genealogical tables. Modern half calf with marbled covers, gilt. First printing of this important translation. "Showered with praise from the start" (cf. Enay). "The classic translation of the Quran [.] Sale worked from the original Arabic, but also used Marracci's Latin version, about which he said it was very precise, but too literal [.] Sale's translation is marked by a rather sober tidiness. Sale himself saw his work as a sort of defence of a much-maligned book [.] The translation's dispassionate, dry objectivity was an enormous step forward for western Quranic studies. Its deserved success was based to no little extent on the 'Preliminary Discourse', which provides a general introduction to the Quran as well as an overview of the most important Muslim denominations [.] For a century this account remained one of the principal sources from which the European educated elite drew its knowledge of all matters Quranic" (cf. Fück). - Title page slightly wrinkled and dusty. A good, very unobtrusively browned copy in an appealing modern binding. Chauvin X, 146. Schnurrer 429. Fück 104f. Enay 169. Graesse IV, 44. Ebert 11524. Seller Inventory # 33478

About this Item: Meyer, Lemgo, 1746. Contemporary Full Calf. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. (24.5 x 20 cm), [6], xxviii, 232 pp., (introduction), 693 pp., [20], [2 corrigenda & addenda], 2 steel folding engraved maps (1 of Arabia), 3 tables showing genealogy of Arab tribes (2 folding), 1 folding plan of Mecca, contemporary full calf, lightly rubbed, title printed in red and black, some worm holes on margins of several pages. "This is the first and only edition of the early German translation based on a translation by George Sale. The introduction to the so-called "Lemgo Koran" which comprises more than 200 pages was determined by the spirit of European Enlightenment. Although Theodor Arnold was convinced of the universal validity of the reformist doctrine, he acted and wrote according to the principle "Honour to whom honour is due". It is important to know that the controversy against Islam was rooted in the falsified and forged translations of the Qur’an. In his introduction Arnold intensively explained those falsifications. Therefore his book is even today up-to-date. The author lays down three rules for the proper approach towards Muslims, which are supposed to have commanded deep unease of the public opinion at that time. Translation of quote: "The first of these rules is to avoid any obligation, the other to avoid doctrine which are against one’s better knowledge. We might think about the Muhammadans what we want, they are not fools, who will be convinced by such arguments. The third rule is to avoid unclear statements.meet them with affability." "His statements on the Prophet and the propagation of his doctrine, too, were in complete contradiction to the popular ideas of his time and continue to be contradictory right through until today." [Enay 177]. Bibliographic references: Ebert 11525; Binark-E. 790/ 1; Schnurrer 430; Pfannmüller 209; Zenker I, 1398. Size: 4to. Seller Inventory # 012610

About this Item: Charles Ackers for John Wilcox, London, 1734. Hardcover. Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. 4to, pp. [6], iii-ix, [3], 187, [1], 508, [15]. First edition of the first English Quran to be translated directly from the Arabic by George Sale, only to be preceded by the first English Quran published in 1649, translated from André du Ryer’s French translation of 1647. The French version already had serious faults and they grew worse in the English translation, so this version was never highly regarded by serious scholars. About this Item: Printed for W. Nicoll, 1766, 1766. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. First Edition. An eighteenth century pot-boiler taking excerpts from Sale’s edition of the Koran in order to bash ‘Papists.’ In the introduction the unknown compiler suggests that Islam took hold in the Middle-East because Christianity had left a moral vacuum. ‘Mohammed arose at a most convenient time for a man of talents to give birth to anew reform of religion. Born in the midst of pagan darkness, and monkish barbarism, religion was debased to such a degree, as rendered the dictates of that subtle Arab really sublime, when compared with the grossness of pagan idolatry on the one hand , and with the then mixture of Christian idolatry and jargon on the other.’ [p. 10] Justification for this view is built from wide ranging excerpts from Soame Jenyns Free Inquiry into the Nature and Origin of Evil; William Warburton, Bishop of Gloucester The Divine Legation of Moses, Tournefort’s Voyages, Ockleys’s Conquest of Syria, Persia, and Egypt by the Saracens, the Bible and of course Sale’s translation of the Koran. To excite sales the compiler has chosen topics likely to be attractive to buyer of the work, not surprisingly the largest extracts are on Divorce, Marriage and Women. Probably the buyer could justify the purchase of such a work containing such titillating material so long as it strengthened and justified their own Protestant bias. The Monthly Review of 1766 gave the work a good puff but was slightly uneasy about introducing such topics of divorce into polite reading, it maybe this reticence on the subjects that accounts for the scarcity of the work. About this Item: Bath Printed by S. Hazard for J. Johnson, Vernor and Hood, Ogilvy and Speare et al 1795, 1795. 2 volumes. An early and very scarce printing of George Sale's great English translation. With three engraved genealogical tables (two folding), a map and a folding plate featuring a view and the plan of the Temple of Mecca, all as in the first edition. 8vo, very handsome full contemporary speckled calf, compartments of the spines elegantly decorated in elaborate panel designs with gilt decorated bands and fine central gilt ornamental devices, gilt rolled border designs, two compartments with contrasting red and green morocco labels ruled and lettered in gilt, board edges gilt stippled, covers with roll tooled borders gilt, marbled endleaves. Vol. I: xii, (2), 266, Table 14 pp. ; Vol. II: (8), 519, Table 12 pp. An especially fine and exceptionally handsome set in beautiful contemporary bindings. The bindings are in excellent condition, the text blocks and paper remain fresh, clean, unpressed and in beautiful condition, near as pristine. VERY RARE IN THIS CONDITION. Sale's version, originally published some years earlier, is the best early translation of the Islamic holy book, and the first English translation taken directly from the original Arabic. The only translation published previous to Sale's was "the despicable French version" of André Du Ryer, issued in 1649, and Alexander Ross published an English version derived from Du Ryer's in the same year. Sale’s intent in translating the Koran was seemingly to educate English readers (and perhaps those in power) about Islam in an atmosphere of what he perceived to be ignorance and intolerance: ".it seems as if there was something more than what is vulgarly imagined, in a religion which has made so surprising a progress." He states, ".as Mohammed gave his Arabs the best religion he could, as well as the best laws, preferable, at least, to those of the ancient pagan lawgivers, I confess I cannot see why he deserves not equal respect, though not with Moses or Jesus Christ, whose laws came really from heaven, yet with Minos or Numa, notwithstanding the distinction of a learned writer, who seems to think it a greater crime to make use of an imposture to set up a new religion, founded on the acknowledgment of one true God, and to destroy idolatry, than to use the same means to gain reception to rules and regulations for the more orderly practice of heathenism already established." He goes on to argue that ".if the religious and civil Institutions of foreign nations are worth our knowledge, those of Mohammed, the lawgiver of the Arabians, and founder of an empire, which, in less than a century, spread itself over a greater part of the world than the Romans were ever masters of, must needs be so.".
