Er ist ein Lebewesen, aber weder Gott noch Geist. Die chinesischen Zeichen, die seinen Namen wiedergeben, bedeuten einbeiniger Geist"; in alten Märchen wird er genauer beschrieben. Er ist auch als Kobold, Buhmann oder Gespenst interpretiert worden, das die Menschen verhext, ihnen Streiche spielt und sie mit seinen dämonischen Fähigkeiten zum Narren hält. Auf zahllosen Türen, Ziegeln, Dachziegeln, Fliesenfußböden, in Zeichnungen und Malereien finden sich in Korea Dokkaebi-Darstellungen. Sie stehen im Zusammenhang mit den vier Gottheiten des Windes, der Wolken, des Regens und des Donners. Weit aufgerissenen Augen, vier dolchartige Zähne, Hörner auf dem Kopf sowie Klauen mit drei Krallenfingern vervollständigen den furchterregenden Eindruck. Ähnlich wie unser Rübezahl spielen Dokkaebis den Vorübergehenden unberechenbare Streiche. Gute Menschen werden mit Reichtum belohnt, schlechten wird das Leben schwer gemacht. Mit ihren Zauberkeulen und ihren Rosshaarhüten können Dokkaebis aber auch Wünsche erfüllen. In diesem Band wird eine Sammlung traditioneller Dokkaebi-Darstellungen vorgelegt, wie sie in der bildenden Kunst und als Architekturdekor vorkommen. Künstler, Designer und an Korea interessierte Leser haben so Zugang zu einem Aspekt ostasiatischer Kunst, die im Westen bisher so gut wie völlig unbekannt war.
