About this Item: Houghton Mifflin Company, 1904. Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. Special Edition. This is the Houghton Mifflin 1904 publication of Lafcadio Hearn's "Kwaidan: Stories and Studies of Strange Things" (240 pages). This is in an elegant slipcase, which is in excellemt condition. The marbled, green and black paper surfaced exterior is unfaded and without tears or other flaws. The inside is felt lined and with a silk ribbon for extracting the book. This book itself has been recovered by Donnelley & Sons, as noted by their name imprinted to the bottom border of the front inside cover, and with an inlaid description, also with their name, noting that the binding has been done with acid free leather. This is signed by the author on the title page. The signature is guaranteed to be as represented. The cover (5.25" x 7.5") has a leather spine, which wraps about an inch into the front and back covers. The spine is straight and securely connected to the inside. The five raised bands have a few surface scuffs, as do the sides, but their is no significant cracking, and no looseness at the hinges. There is extensive gilt decoration, with slightly debossed lotus graphics. The title and author, in gold, are clearly legible (see photo). The boards, colored floral decorations, are clean and unfaded. There is minimal wear to the edges, but no tears or stains of note. The inside front cover spread has the previous owner's stamp. There are no other stamps or attachments. The signature, Lafcadio, is the only writing. The only flaws of note are to two leaves (15/16 and 17/18) which have shallow tears to the outside edges, apparently from those leaves having but cut open with some awkwardness. There is no missing material. The tear is less than ⅛". The pages are clean throughout the book, with all text as new, and with the two Keishū Takénouchi illustrations in the same condition. There are no page tears (other than those mentioned above) and no creases. The accompanying photos are of this copy. International shipping would be by priority insured mail, with a shipping charge of $40. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 1326
