No. 354 of 1,500 copies made by the Shimbi Shoin, Ltd. in Tokyo for the members of the Limited Editions Club. "Lafcadio Hearn (1850-1904) worked for newspapers writing sensational stories about murders, accidents, and other violent incidents before leaving the United States for Martinique, and later Japan, to pursue his interests in the bizarre and curious customs of foreign peoples. In Japan, he found such a wealth of material that he lived there for the remaining 14 years of his life, teaching English literature at the Imperial University in Tokyo and researching Japanese folklore. As Oscar Lewis writes in his introduction to this Limited Editions Club edition of Kawidan, 'He early realized that the country [of Japan] presented an amazingly fertile field for the exercise of his peculiar variety of talent. For it was in the study of alien beliefs and customs and in the interpretation of an alien environment and viewpoint that Hearn found his chief interest.' Yasumasa Fujita created the 21 beautiful full-page color and monochrome illustrations, the one double-page spread, and the illustrations for both endpapers." VG- (Light-medium foxing to some pages; outer case quite good, but spine and back cover are completey separated, although the case is still "whole," as it is closed with ivory closures. Light wear to cover spine edges and age toning to outer edges of labels. Bookseller Inventory # 122292
