Item Description: Chez L'auteur, Rue des Fosses St Jacques, Paris., 1800. Loose as Issued. Book Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Hand-Coloured soft ground engraving. of the famous French Fabulist writerJean de la Fontaine (1621-1695) and up until recently one of the most widely read poets in French in the world. According to Flaubert, the ONLY French poet to understand and master the "texture" of the French language before Victor Hugo. The Engraver Pierre Charles Cocqueret here working in the aquatint medium, and this being an early example of this medium, was exhibiting in Paris between 1789-1810 at the Salon. *Aquatinting processes were first perfected about 1800, this soft, delicate image has the appearance of a stipple engraving in the background, perhaps a mixed medium? The French engravers chose to work mostly in lithography in the early 19th century whilst the English embraced the finer aquatint medium and is termed in art circles as " manière anglais" This is a rare departure and probably dates to the late1790's. Measures; 40 x 34 cm (approx) The print is in an original period Hogarth style black and gilt frame. I will post carefully and with sufficient protection so the buyer does not lose this originality. The backing paper is 20th century. Bought from a private estate. Bookseller Inventory # 00960

Item Description: Zürich, Chez Heidegger & Comp., 1764. 408 pp. 12mo. Contemporary marbled calf, spine gilt in compartments, label with gilt lettering, red edges, a trifle worn. Musset-Pathay 1772; not in Kress (cf.: 6511); not in Goldsmiths; Einaudi 2905 (edition of 1777); Carpenter, Dialogues in Political Economy. Translations from and into German in the 18th century, p. 14 and no. 15; Mattioli 1639 (later edition). Although the title states "Seconde édition," it is actually the third and best edition, seriously augmented (earlier editions counted 208 pages) and now including the correspondence of the author with Mirabeau, to whom the work is dedicated. Hans Kaspar Hirzel (1725-1803), town physician of Zurich, describes the model farm of Jakob Gujer (1716-1785), known as 'Chlijogg', a farmer-philosopher who attained European fame through this account. Goethe came to see him twice and thought him one of the most wonderful creatures on earth. He was portrayed by Lavater in his famous work on physiognomy. The first German edition of this work was published in 1761 by Heidegger as part of Abhandlungen der Naturforschenden Gesellschaft in Zürich; he also published the first French edition, the first to be in book form, in 1762. It was through the French edition that this work became widely known.'This was the most succesful German socio-economic work of the 18th century. It shows the importance of French as an intermediary language. (.) More importantly, through the French translation it came to the attention of Arthur Young who had it translated and published as an appendix to his Rural Economy (1770) which went through several editions. The translation made for Arthur Young was also published several times in the American colonies and in the early years of the new republic. The myth it fostered of the superior virtue of the agricultural life has been a powerful and persistent force in American life' (Carpenter). Bookseller Inventory # 16197
