About this Item: A Amsterdam et a Berlin, Chez Jean Neaulme. Et se vend à Paris, Chez Guérin & Delatour, 1754., 1754. 12mo, pp. xii, 482, [2]; a very fine copy, attractively bound in contemporary French mottled calf, spine gilt in compartments, red edges.First French edition, translated from the English by Vincent de Gournay and Georges-Marie Butel-Dumont. Gournay (1712-1759) was intendant of commerce from 1751, and travelled around France, occasionally with Turgot, on his visits of official inspection. Gournay 'chafed at the trammels which harassed trade, recommended the study of economics, especially the writings of Cantillon, Tucker, Culpepper, Child, and other English authors, and was in favour of internal free trade and of light customs duties' (Higgs). A disciple of François Quesnay, and a leader of the Physiocratic School, he wrote little of his own, but his exchanges with fellow economists played a pivotal role in the development of French economic thought, and his translations and popularizations were instrumental in the Continental diffusion of pioneering works by English economists. He is believed to have coined the expression 'laissez faire, laissez passer'.Einaudi 1083; Goldsmiths'8910; Higgs 746; INED 4461 note; Kress 5335. Seller Inventory # H3804

(Adamovsky). [Bibl: Adamovsky, E.: Euro-Orientalism. Liberal Ideology and the image of Russia in France (c. 1740-1880). Oxford - New York: Peter Lang, 1986.] INED 2879., Einaudi 3358., Kress B. 55.
