About this Item: Little, Brown, and Company, 1899. Hardcover. Condition: Very good. First of this illustrated editio. Boston, MA: Little Brown, 1899. Illustrated edition. Very good, no dust jacket. No former owner's names. Translated by Katherine Prescott Wormeley. This copy retains the original title: "Seraphita the Alkahest". Alkahest refers to a hypothetical universal solvent, having the power to dissolve every other substance, including gold. It was much sought after by alchemists for what they thought would be its invaluable medicinal qualities. The name is believed to have been invented by Paracelsus. He believed that alkahest was, in fact, the philosopher's stone. Way ahead of its time, Balzac's novel explores the discovery of Seraphita/tus the 'perfect androgyne': "being neither male nor female according to the labels of society, with an inherited ability to transcend gender. Gender, therefore, becomes a mark of the labels of humanity, and by following the practices of Swedenborg, one can rise above their gender and become pure and complete. This cutting edge text remains as culturally relevant today as it was when first published and rightfully deserves its place in the annals of literature", and esoteric philosophy.
