About this Item: Girolamo Mainardi, Urbino, 1735. Vellum. Condition: Very Good. Pp. 11 p.l., 316. Complete with half-title, title in red and black, engraved printer's device and initials, 20 full-page copper engravings by Arnold van Westerhout after Antonio Tempesta. Contemporary full vellum, gilt tooled label. Binding lightly rubbed and soiled, very occasional light marginal foxing, but overall an exceptionally clean, crisp copy, with dark, rich impressions of the plates, in a handsome, well-preserved binding. Tasso's epic poem,"Gerusalemme Liberata", was first published without the author's consent, during his confinement in an asylum by the Duke of Ferrara, in Venegia in 1580. The first authorised edition with the author's corrections appeared in Parma in 1581. Despite ecclesiastical reservations regarding its orthodoxy, Tasso's heroic verse account of the First Crusade was greeted with immediate critical and popular acclaim throughout Europe, passing through six further editions in a mere seven months. From the time of Edward Fairfax's English translation of "Jerusalem Delivered" in 1600, Tasso's masterpiece came to exert a strong influence on English poetry, from Spenser to Byron. The present 1735 edition is embellished with the illustrations of the Florentine artist Antonio Tempesta (1555- 1630), first published in 1725. Tempesta's many paintings and engravings of classical landscapes and heroic battle scenes were immensely popular in their time, and contributed to the spread a certain late Mannerist style. (Bellini, Dizionario della Stampa D'Arte, 1995). Brunet V 666. Graesse VI 33. Gamba 948. Size: Folio. Seller Inventory # 21458
