Item Description: PARMA, NEL REGAL PALAZZO - CO' TIPI BODONIANI, 1794 2 volumi In-folio grande, 1794. Rilegato. Book Condition: buono. 0. Bookseller Inventory # 1144

(2), XXX, 364; XII, 360. A wonderful set in exemplary condition, extremely fresh and clean, the paper unpressed and the impression is bold, dark and fine. A RARE, IMPORTANT AND VERY BEAUTIFUL EDITION OF THIS CLASSIC OF ITALIAN LITERATURE. The edition has long been considered one of the richest and most magnificent of the many editions of Tasso printed over the centuries. Poet, prose writer and literary theorist, Tasso was successor to and deviator from the tradition of Boiardo and Ariosto, he gave to the court of Ferrara the third of the great ottava rima epic romances celebrating the Este ancestry, Gerusalemme Liberata, and the purest example of Renaissance pastoral drama, Aminta. Even before its end, his life became a legend of poetic madness and wandering. Born in Sorrento, he shared the political exile of his father, Bernardo, and began his literary studies and his long experience of Italian courts in Urbino. He attended the universities of Padua and of Bologna, at 18 published Rinaldo, a chivalric poem in 12 cantos, and in 1565 took service with Cardinal Luigi d'Este. Although he completed the Liberata in 1575, Tasso was never to be satisfied with it in relation to neo-Aristotelian canons of epic poetry or to Counter-Reformation religious orthodoxy, and restlessly he consulted scholars on one score and ecclesiastical inquisitors on the other. In 1577 he was imprisoned for a paranoid display of violence in the presence of Lucrezia d'Este. He escaped to the south but, following another outburst on his return to Ferrara in 1579, was shut up in the hospital of S. Anna, to remain there until 1586. The Liberata was finally published in 1581, but Tasso continued to regard the poem as unfinished while it circulated in several editions from that year on. Released from S. Anna, he went to Mantua under the protection of Duke Vincenzo Gonzaga, and thence into a ceaseless vagabondage that took him to Genoa, Rome, Naples and Florence. He received hospitality from religious orders and academies, from the Medici, from the marquis Giambattista Manso, and from Pope Clement VIII and his nephew, to whom Tasso dedicated the only authorized version of his epic, much reworked and retitled. Item Description: 1785. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. A magnificent example of French 18th century printing, illustrated by Cochin, in a contemporary English morocco; an extra illustrated copy. [1785-1786]. Paris. Firmin Didot. Two volumes in 4to (305 mm x 225 mm). Contemporary English blue grain-long morocco, rectangular and interlacing gilt fillets to boards, raised bands to spine, with morocco inlays, lettered in gilt. A fine copy, with wide margins, very clean; minor foxing. Splendid edition –second- made by Francois Ambroise Didot (1730 – 1804), the foremost printer of France at the end of the 18th century, at the request order of the Count of Provence, brother of Louis XVI. Didot introduced in France the fabrication of “papier velin”, with the help of Benjamin Franklin; the work is one of 200 copies in such paper. The illustration comprises a frontispiece and 40 plates by the artist Charles Nicolas Cochin (1715 – 1790), again, ordered to Cochin by the Count of Provence and engraved by Dambrun, Delignon, Duclos, de Launay, Ponce, Prevost, Saint Aubin, Simonet, Tillard, amongst others; 82 designs were ordered, however only 41 were engraved. Cochin contributed to a number of relevant literary works. This copy is enriched with 32 extra plates. Tasso (1544 – 1595) is one of Italy’s Renaissance most remarkable poets, both for his literary success and his troubled personal life; he achieved the peak of his fame with this work, an epic poem on the first crusade. Item Description: Girolamo Mainardi, Urbino, 1735. Vellum. Book Condition: Very Good. Pp. 11 p.l., 316. Complete with half-title, title in red and black, engraved printer's device and initials, 20 full-page copper engravings by Arnold van Westerhout after Antonio Tempesta. Contemporary full vellum, gilt tooled label. Binding lightly rubbed and soiled, very occasional light marginal foxing, but overall an exceptionally clean, crisp copy, with dark, rich impressions of the plates, in a handsome, well-preserved binding. Tasso's epic poem,"Gerusalemme Liberata", was first published without the author's consent, during his confinement in an asylum by the Duke of Ferrara, in Venegia in 1580. The first authorised edition with the author's corrections appeared in Parma in 1581. Despite ecclesiastical reservations regarding its orthodoxy, Tasso's heroic verse account of the First Crusade was greeted with immediate critical and popular acclaim throughout Europe, passing through six further editions in a mere seven months. From the time of Edward Fairfax's English translation of "Jerusalem Delivered" in 1600, Tasso's masterpiece came to exert a strong influence on English poetry, from Spenser to Byron. The present 1735 edition is embellished with the illustrations of the Florentine artist Antonio Tempesta (1555- 1630), first published in 1725. Tempesta's many paintings and engravings of classical landscapes and heroic battle scenes were immensely popular in their time, and contributed to the spread a certain late Mannerist style. (Bellini, Dizionario della Stampa D'Arte, 1995). Brunet V 666. Graesse VI 33. Gamba 948. Size: Folio. Bookseller Inventory # 21458

Item Description: Appresso Agostino Delalain, Pietro Durand, Gio: Claudio Molini, Parigi, 1771. Hardcover. Illustrated by Gravelot, Hubert-François (illustrator). First Edition. In two volumes. 331pp; 340pp. Contemporary full mottled calf, sides with triple gilt fillets, ornate gilt spines, gilt inside dentelles. All edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Frontispieces, titles, dedication, nineteen inserted plates, nine full-page illustrations, head-pieces, tail-pieces, all by Gravelot and engraved by Ponce, Leveau, Le Roy, Rousseau, Henriquez, and others. Rubbing and scuffs to sides and edges, three small old ink stains to bottom edge of volume one, short corner tear to one leaf. Lacks the plate for the eighteenth canto and there are some very minor markings in ink to some of the plates. From what transpires from the two old inscriptions on the front endpapers this set was donated by the Vicar of a church near Brescia to a noted scholar and professor at the University of Brescia. The ink in the markings appears to be the same as the ink in the inscription. Likely the Vicar decided to censor some of the images. A good+ set. Gamba 948. Graesse VII.33. ; Octavo.
