About this Item: Geoscience Publishing, Sherwood Park (AB, Canada), 2005. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: dust jacket (new). First Edition. "The Athabasca oil sands have reserves second only to Saudi Arabia. Unlocking this vast resource came about through the efforts of Dr. Karl A. Clark at the Alberta Research Council, who developed the so-called hot water process now used by all companies producing oil from these sands. The fifteen years chronicled through the letters in this book record the transition between fundamental oil sands research and the advent of industrial production. The year 1949 marked a turning point in oil sands history. That summer the Bitumount pilot plant built on the banks of the Athabasca River proved the technical viability of Clark’s hot water separation process. This signalled to the oil companies that it was time to take serious notice that the Athabasca deposit represented a potential new source of crude oil. That year was also a turning point for Dr. Clark’s work which now drew away from separation studies and focused on information that would be needed by commercial interests promoting a new industry. More had to be known about the oil itself, the geology of the deposit, and the engineering principles governing machinery to be used. Knowledge gained was made freely available to all who showed an interest. His letters are warm, well written, and informative. In the history of the development of the oil sands industry, Dr. Clark’s work played an outstandingly significant role. Clark’s hot water separation process was the key to unlocking the vast potential of the Athabasca oil sands. To call him the Father of the Oil Sands would not be far off the mark. 342 pp., 38 halftones, 4 line diagrams, Weight 0.8 kg, Shrink-wrapped". book (hardcover). Seller Inventory # GP003

About this Item: London: Woolwich Arsenal, 1790, 1790. Fourteen large folio pages, handwritten in neat script with one hand drawn illustration showing the profile of the building as it is to be equipped with a special chimney for the new sulphur refinery - "to carry off the dangerous effluvia". Minor chips and tears to edges, minor spotting. The letters were, apparently, rescued from a bonfire when the storage building at Woolwich Arsenal was demolished in the 1970s. As a group, they provide a view into the daily workings of the most important military research establishment in the British Isles during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The letters make reference to Major William Congreve (later Sir), the Comptroller of the Royal Laboratories at the Royal Arsenal, who ten years after these papers were written won substantial renown as a result of his work on rocket technology. These Congreve rockets, heavily based on Mysorean rockets used against the British East India Company, were used to great effect in subsequent wars, including the Napoleonic Wars. Included in these documents are lists of requirements, including personnel and various ingredients for making cartridges, documents calculating the expense of powder for the war office, and discussion concerning the construction of various engines and pieces of machinary, such as the aforementioned sulphur refinery.
