About this Item: London John Murray, for the Royal Geographical Society 1873, 1873. First edition. One large folding map. 8vo, original royal blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine. vii, 271. A good copy, the spine showing some mild aging, edges of boards with evidence of old staining. Textblock in good order, large folding map present. Also includes "Journey of the Pombeiros: P. J. Battista and Amaro José, Across Africa From Angola to Tette on the Zambeze," translated by B. A. Beadle; and "Résumé of the Journey of M. M. Monteiro and Gamitto" by Dr. C. T. Beke. The RGS published these early accounts of Portuguese journeys into the African interior in the wake of increased interest in African exploration due to Livingstone's travels. According to Penzer, Burton had also written two appendices which were rejected by the RGS due to their controversial nature. In Penzer's time, as he mentions, original printings of the book were still available from the RGS, though of course now the book is rather uncommon. There was only one edition of this book. About this Item: 1873. First (only) edition. 8vo. Unbound, title page detached, incomplete, review of the work pasted on verso of title page, an autograph ms slip loosely inserted, with a modern morocco drop back box, gilt. [1]-56, 71-2, 87-8, 103-4pp. London, John Murray for the Royal Geographic Society, Signed by Burton on the title page with his annotations throughout the text. This appears to be a working copy, on which Burton has made typographic and factual corrections, notes misprints and other observations. The autograph slip enclosed lists ?Dr de Lacerda's observations 1797-1798?, a small table denoting the latitude and longitude of eight separate places included on page 123 of the published text. In addition to their annual volume of transactions, the Royal Geographical Society occasionally published works of geography. Prompted by Livingstone's explorations, this was a particularly important example, including nearly everything known of the interior of Africa to that time. Burton's piece occupied the first 164 pages of the work and included two controversial appendicies that were later rejected by the Royal Geographic Society. Penzer, pp89-90; Casada, 85.
