About this Item: Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Boston, various publishers: [Brown, Taggard & Chase; John P Jewett; Chase, Nichols & Hill and Damrell, Moore and Coolidge]. Five 16mo volumes, for the years 1854, 1856, 1857, 1860 and 1861, bound in violet cloth lettered in gilt with gilt page ends. All feature title page with woodcut illustration, and illustrations throughout, with many striking period ads for Boston area firms bound in at front and rear of each volume. A rare run of this Civil War era almanac for young ladies, which featured essays, poetry, songs, fashion for young women (with illustrations) and biographies of noted figures of the day, including Frances Sargent Osgood, Sarah Josepha Hale, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Sara J Lippincott and others. With charming woodcuts throughout. The Memoranda sections in most volumes have been filled out, in the neat contemporaneous hand of a young woman, with notes on berrying and fishing in Newburyport, visits to friends and relatives, notes on the weather, etc. Minor wear to spine tips, rear board of almanac for 1861 with two shallow dents, ads at front of 1857 almanac jutting slightly, but a very nice set of an uncommon Civil War era almanac.
