These introductions were Lawrence's response to the controversy of Lady Chatterley's Lover and the rampant piracy of the novel. In the spring of 1928, Lawrence had commissioned the Tipografia Guintina, in Florence, to print Lady Chatterley's Lover after it was rejected by numerous English publishers. He planned to sell one thousand signed and numbered copies for £2 each, with friends acting as agents. By the end of the year, nearly all copies were sold, despite (or perhaps because of) the novel being banned from the United States and about to be suppressed in London. In these introductions, Lawrence took a two-pronged approach to the defense of Lady Chatterley's Lover. He began by explaining his decision to bring out an authorized popular edition, in response to the piracies. Then he broached the topic of sex , arguing in favor of treating sex respectfully but explicitly in literature. N. B. This remarkable and very beautiful edition has become the most sought after edition in the series by far. Sir Paul Smith designed the book, and chose to cover the board binding in delicate embroidered silk, which features the flowers Lawrence mentions in the book. The silk has been used for every aspect of this gorgeous book; even the Penguin logo is embroidered in silk. This particular copy has a unique signed pictorial card from the great designer himself, which is loose laid on the title page. This really is a breathtaking production in every way, from its large format pages to its silk covering over the top of the binding boards, all the way to the heavy lucite case that was especially designed for the book, and which has a subtle explanatory text silk screened on to it, and which I found too difficult to photograph. This edition is likely pirated, printed shortly after the first edition and is nearly identical in format to the true first. Without the copyright notice of Tipografia Giuntina at the bottom of the copyright page and "Privately Printed, Florence, 1928" on the title page. From Wikipedia: "The first edition was printed privately in Florence, Italy, with assistance from Pino Orioli; an unexpurgated edition could not be published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960. (A private edition was issued by Inky Stephensen's Mandrake Press in 1929.) The book soon became notorious for its story of the physical (and emotional) relationship between a working-class man and an upper-class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex, and its use of then-unprintable words." Measuring 9 ¼ inches tall, the book has been rebound in beautiful deckled paper and ¾ red leather with raised bands, gilt rules, gilt fleur de lis, gilt title/author lettering on spine and deckled pastedowns and end papers. Structurally and appearance wise, it is in very good condition. With black and red text to title page, interior contents are in very good + condition, all pages present, all bright with no errant marks or names. Top corners of most pages show light creasing. Page ends show some age soiling largely to top and rough cut fore edges. Top page ends also show a short thin streak of soiling and a couple of extremely faded very small damp stains near crown. Condition: Very Good. A very good plus hardcover copy. Spine has been rebacked with original label. Copy is very tight and clean. SIGNED LIMITED EDITION OF 1000 copies of which this is number 526. Two signatures in pencil appear on the front free endpaper; Sara Higgins and Joe Foster. Sara Higgins was the wife of Victor Higgins, a well known artist of the Taos Circle. Both were good friends of D. H. Lawrence as was Joe Foster who wrote a bibliography of Lawrence. All pages are very clean, no tears. Book comes with a handsome clamshell box.

Lawrence on the limitation page which is opposite the tile page. Professional full leather binding in slipcase. Slipcase has brown cloth cover and is lined with a black felt. Volume is full leather binding with gilt title, author, date and decoration between 5 raised bands down the spine. Gilt line to the extremities of the front and rear boards, original brown cloth front cover with the phoenix has been used as the front paste down with brown end pages (a nice touch). The text block has rough cut pages. Condition - the slipcase has the slightest of wear at the corners, the volume has a very small rub on the spine above and below the title, original cloth cover has marks to the extremities where it has pasted to the original boards, there is very light foxing and tanning throughout otherwise contents are clean, bright and tight. The story of the physical and emotional relationship between a working class man and an upper class woman, its explicit descriptions of sex soon led to routine confiscation and destruction of any copies police and customs officials could find in both England and the United States. An unexpurgated edition was not published openly in the United Kingdom until 1960, when it was the subject of a watershed obscenity trial against the publisher Penguin Books. Penguin won the case under the Obscene Publications Act 1959, and quickly sold 3 million copies. The book was also banned for obscenity in the United States, Canada, Australia, India, and Japan and was not available in the United States until Grove Press brought the matter to court in 1959, over 30 years after the publication of the first edition (Roberts, 42a).

Although poetical in the general treatment of its subject, this book is a landmark in the history of the English novel in that it depicts for the first time in a studied and unabashedly direct way the concrete sexual experience, accompanied by the uninhibited language of real life. This novel shines as an example of Lawrence's finite skill in conveying the nature of relationships and his use of characters to communicate his personal philosophy. His depiction of love-making (seen as shocking at the time) and the intimacy and sense of touch derives from his wish to restore an emphasis on the body and balance it with what he perceived to be Western civilisation's over-emphasis on the mind. Lawrence's writing and opinions earned him many enemies, censorship and misrepresentation of his creativity, which was his reflection on the dehumanising effects of modernity and industrialisation, while also exploring issues such as emotional health, vitality, spontaneity and instinct. To avoid British censorship and certain prosecution, this edition of Lady Chatterley's Lover was published privately in Florence therefore not only is it the first edition but the first unexpurgated edition, which would not be seen in the U. K. until 1960. Even then, the publisher, Penguin stood trial under the Obscene Publications Act of 1959, in which one of the objections was to the frequent use of the word 'fuck'. The prosecution was ridiculed for being out of touch with changing social opinions, particularly when the Chief Prosecutor, Mervyn Griffith-Jones asked if it were the kind of book 'you would wish your wife or servants to read.' The jury was less prudish and acquitted Penguin on all charges.

First edition, first impression, number 596 of 1,000 copies signed and numbered by the author, here retaining the scarce plain paper dust jacket, well-preserved in a contemporary glassine wrapper possibly issued by the publisher. This copy is offered together with an unpublished autograph postcard from the author to his mother-in-law, Anna Freiin von Richthofen (1879-1930). The postcard - located and dated "Santa Fe. 18 Okt", and franked the same day - was sent by Lawrence in 1924 to "Frau Baronin von Richthofen", the title shared by Lawrence's wife Frieda, her sister Else, and their mother Anna, with whom Lawrence maintained a close correspondence. Written in German, it reads: "reisen morgen nach El Paso - ich schiche dir heute Photographien von Ranch" ["Travelling tomorrow to El Paso - I am sending you the Ranch photographs today"]. The "Ranch" refers to Lawrence's New Mexico residence, where he lived between 1922 and 1924, and where he was interred after his death. Lawrence's novel was printed in Florence by a small avant-garde publisher to circumvent British obscenity laws. "Lady Chatterley's Lover - written in the astonishing time of just five weeks, in one of Lawrence's last great bursts of creative energy - also sustained him, as he overcame the difficulties lying in the way of an individual publishing and distributing his own book. With the help of the Florentine bookseller Pino Orioli, the handsome volume was printed in and distributed from Florence, and made Lawrence more money than he had ever imagined" (ODNB). A fine copy, crisp and clean with just a little foxing to the title label in a fine dustwrapper with a trace of wear to the spine ends and a tiny puncture to the rear panel. It was rejected by both British and American publishers on the grounds of obscenity, forcing Lawrence to seek the help of Florentine bookseller Giuseppe Orioli, who arranged for the book to be set by hand by Italian printers and issued on subscription in an edition of 1000 copies. Despite being banned in Britain and America, with several illicit consignments seized in police raids, the edition sold out within six months. It was subsequently pirated and translated, expurgated and bowdlerised, condemned and confiscated until Penguin's unexpurgated publication and subsequent acquittal for obscenity in 1960 marked a significant advance for the freedom of the written word.
