Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fair. 1st Edition. The First Edition of this rare, unusual and fascinating cookbook - unusual since its directions are aimed not at professional cooks but ordinary people, many of whom would have employed a cook if they could afford one, but in doing their own cooking have found a new and absorbing enterprise.Yes, of course it is dated, but that is it's charm. Lady Sysonby remarks that she does not start her recipes with "take 20 quails and soak them for twenty-four hours." but that her book is "intended for those not necessarily rich, who want good food and mean to have it." Terrific period charm, and some excellent recipes. The decorations by Oliver Messel are enchanting. The text itself is fine, crisp and firm, no sticky finger marks. Definitely one for the collector of cookbooks. The dust jacket is minus the spine and has been stuck down to the fabric of the original front and back (one small mark to the spine) but leaving the flaps free.
