The northern mountain regions of the Indian subcontinent abound in treasures of religious and mythological art of astounding beauty. The wallpaintings and sculptures of the temples and monasteries, many of them thousands of years old, represent a commentary on the changing forms and influences in Indian art, here distilled, refined and preserved in the isolation of the mountain valleys and plateaux. Until now, no general account of Himalayan art covering the whole region from Ladakh in the west to Bhutan in the east has been published, mainly because the wallpaintings and sculptures are situated in remote religious communities. Madanjeet Singh has been fortunate in obtaining the support of the Governments of India and of Nepal, the Dalai Lama and the rulers of Sikkim and Bhutan, and with their permission he has been able to travel to even the most remote sites and has photographed works of art whose reproduction had hitherto been forbidden. In addition to the magnificently reproduced pictorial record, Madanjeet Singh provides a lucid account of the art of the region ~ covering Ladakh, Lahaul and Spiti, the Siwalik ranges, Nepal, Sikkirn and Bhutan and sets the development of Himalayan art forms and their styles against the changing historical and cultural scene. A member of the Indian Foreign Service, Madanjeet Singh is a rare combination of scholar, painter and photographer. He made over thirty~five elaborate expeditions, each of several weeks, and mostly on foot or ponies, visiting shrines at heights of between 1,000 to 4,000 meters, some of them right on the Chinese and Tibetan frontiers. In the course of his treks he made over 7,000 reproductions of manuscripts, wallpaintings and sculptures. The result is this incomparable volume «Himalayan Art », which makes available for the first time to art~lovers an extensive pictorial record of the wallpaintings and sculptures of the Himalayan region. ~ Cover plate on the jacket: PANCHANANA SHIVA, PANCHAVAKTRA TEMPLE, MANDI, HIMACHAL PRADESH. 14th CENTURY AD. About this Item: Penguin, New Delhi, India, 2010. Hardcover. Condition: New. Dust Jacket Condition: New. First Edition. In the summer of 1962, a restless young Indian administrator, Manohar Singh Gill, made an arduous journey from the north Indian plains to the farthest reaches of the Indian Himalayas—the Lahaul and Spiti valleys—and spent a year there, living and working amongst the people. Gill went on to a distinguished career in the civil services and government, but his experience of the relentless beauty of these spectacular Himalayan deserts and the generosity of the people of this land changed him for life. Part memoir, part travel book and part anthropology, Himalayan Wonderland is a witty, opinionated account of Gill’s lifelong affair with this extraordinary region. The book, however, is much more than one man’s account of a place it is a hopeful and enlightening view of the practice of administration and the joy of working with people. Illustrated with more than forty photographs taken by Gill himself, and including detailed contour maps and information on trekking routes in Lahaul and Spiti, this is a remarkably illuminating and accessible account of this faraway land—from the 1960s, when few knew about the place, to today’s unpredictable world of receding glaciers and lost cultures. Printed Pages: 296 with 8 colour and 16 b/w illustrations. Size: 15 x 23 Cm. Seller Inventory # 031820
