About this Item: Pantheon Books, 1977. hardcover. 1st edition. New York. 1977. Pantheon Books. 1st American Edition. Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. 224 pages. June 1977. hardcover. Jacket illustration by Jack Tulling. ISBN: 0394412532. inventory # 1618. FROM THE PUBLISHER - Mcllvanney’s earlier works were set in Glasgow, and he has not abandoned this regional setting in turning to crime. On the contrary, Glasgow itself becomes one of the protagonists of the book. Laidlaw, the other protagonist, is far from being a classic English police detective. Indeed, the relationship between the police and the criminals, and the alliance they ultimately form to find the villain of the book, seem far more American than British. In its toughness and realism, LAIDLAW is reminiscent of the Sjowall-Wahloo Martin Beck series. Yet Glasgow is a drearier and poorer city than Stockholm, its slums and underworld much more like our own. But while McIlvanney’s book can be compared to others, it is very much an original, a promising beginning to a series that will replenish the all-too-thin ranks of really first-rate crime novels. Very Good In Slightly Worn Dustjacket. Seller Inventory # z1618

About this Item: Venture Productions, New York, 1977. Soft cover. Condition: Good. 1st Edition. LAIDLAW. An unproduced SCREENPLAY by EDWARD BOYD (Scottish Writer); from the NOVEL LAIDLAW by WILLIAM McILVANNEY (Famous Scottish Noir Crime Writer). An Original Vintage Script. Bound in flexible red vinyl covers with two brass brads, the front cover has the title LAIDLAW by EDWARD BOYD printed at the center, and "STUDIO Duplicating Service Inc. / 434 west 43rd St., N.Y.C. / LO 3-1225" printed at the bottom, both in gilt. The inner pages are photocopied on 8.5x11 inch white paper (photocopying was, and still is, how original copies of scripts were quickly produced and distributed to actors, producers, directors, editors and others involved in a film production), 132 pages plus a title page, pages printed on one side only, 3 hole punched. There is a number 21 handwritten on the title page, perhaps indicating this is copy number 21. Undated but circa 1977, the year the novel LAIDLAW was published. GOOD condition, the covers are creased where they overhang the inner pages and at the spine ends, have some rubs, and the gilt lettering has faded; there is a stain to the upper portion of the front page edges (edges of the closed script) that also stains a bit of the upper front margin of the inner pages, not affecting text; otherwise the pages are very nice, tight, bright, clean and clear. About the novel LAIDLAW and its author WILLIAM McILVANNEY (excerpts from Wikipedia): ******William McIlvanney (b. 1936 d.2015) was a Scottish novelist, short story writer, and poet. McIlvanney was a known for his gritty yet poetic literature; his works Laidlaw, The Papers of Tony Veitch, and Walking Wounded are all known for their portrayal of Glasgow in the 1970s. He is regarded as the FATHER OF TARTAN NOIR and as Scotland's Camus. LAIDLAW, first published in 1977, is the first novel of a series of crime books by WILLIAM McILVANNEY. It features the eponymous detective in his attempts to find the brutal sex related murderer of a Glasgow teenager. Laidlaw is marked a 1970s Glasgow that features violence and bigotry. LAIDLAW is considered the first TARTAN NOIR novel. It is said that all Scottish Noir Crime novels have their roots in Laidlaw.****** About the Screenwriter Edward Boyd (from Wikipedia) ******Edward Boyd (b.1916 d. 1989) was a Scottish writer. Boyd was born in Stevenston in North Ayrshire. He worked with the Glasgow Unity Theatre in the 1940s. Later he moved into writing for radio and television. In the 1960s he created such series such as The Odd Man and The Corridor People for Granada TV, and wrote for a number of serials including Z-Cars on the BBC. In the 1970s he wrote the BBC series The View From Daniel Pike starring Scottish actor Roddy McMillan as a dour private detective. A collection of Boyd's papers, including some scripts, are held by Glasgow University.******. Seller Inventory # 001413
