Item Description: Yale University Press, New Haven, 1932. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. First Edition. Scarce biography of this Maryland captain in the Continental Navy during the American Revolution. While "forgotten hero" of military conflicts can be a cliche, Wickes exploits make him worthy of consideration. Wickes fought against the Royal Navy on the Delaware River prior to the Philadelphia Campaign, transported munitions from the West Indies for George Washington's army, and brought Benjamin Franklin safely to France. He raided the British coast, and in command of a squadron of three ships, captured approximately 20 prizes. This promising career was cut short when Wickes' ship foundered in a storm off Newfoundland in 1777. Original green cloth with light wear at head and base of spine. Binding firm. Contents clean with black and white facsimile documents. Moderately edgeworn dust jacket with chipping at head of spine; heavier wear to upper-rear of jacket with V-shape tear and crease; in mylar cover. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall, 466 pp. Bookseller Inventory # 005400
